Sanctuary Animals Safe From Colorado Wildfires

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Yesterday, at least four wind-whipped wildfires burned along the front of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, damaging a large number of homes and forcing people and animals alike to evacuate the area. One animal sanctuary was directly threatened by the blaze and had to relocate all of the animals from its farm. The Black Forest Animal Sanctuary had to move 80 dogs, 20 cats, some horses, and perhaps other animals in a very short period of time. The Big Cat Is Back On The Prowl

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Once teetering on the brink of extinction, the North American cougar is now one of the greatest success stories in wildlife conservation. The big cat species goes by a wide variety of different names including mountain lion, catamount, puma, panther, and painter. By 1900, cougars were nearly extinct in all regions east of the Rockies. They were treated like vermin and allowed to be shot on sight. Fortunately, the panther is back on the prowl with an estimated 30,000 living in North America. Upon their arrival, the compassionate crew met with various local pastors to determine where to disperse the tail-wagging team to best serve the people of Oklahoma. Swine Flu Strikes Seals

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) The swine flu virus has been found in elephant seals off the central coast of California, according to a recent study. The research is the first to report the H1N1 virus in marine mammals, which shows influenza viruses can be transferred among species. During the study, scientists encountered two northern elephant seals who were infected, and they discovered an additional 28 seals carrying swine flu antibodies.
