37 Lucky Pups Rescued

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) DUBLIN — Nearly forty puppies suffering from various infections were rescued by Dublin police this week. After an officer stopped two cars on the road and saw a variety of beagles, cocker spaniels, and Jack Russells in the backseat, the pups were seized and taken to The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA). Employees speculated the find to be a “case of animal trafficking from puppy farms within Ireland, destined for the UK.” In light of this incident, it is important to be careful when sourcing your puppy and remember that adoption is always the best option. Animal Intervention Saves Captive Wildlife (VIDEO)

(ACTIVISM) Premiering today, Tuesday, October 2 at 9 pm, NatGeo Wild’s new television show Animal Intervention will feature animal advocates Alison Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s daughter), Donald Schultz, and Billy McNamara who investigate particular cases of wildlife owners who keep exotic animals in harmful environments and intervene in order to relocate these animals to safe animal sanctuaries. Some of the owners breed their animals, further crowding their facilities and increasing the overall population of exotics living in captivity. The show also addresses the appalling conditions at roadside zoos, private ranches, circuses, and magic shows, where animals are exceptionally maltreated. — Global Animal

Birth of Baby ‘Liger’ Sparks Giant Controversy

(LIGERS) There’s no question that the pictures of the gigantic creature Hercules and adorable liger cub, Aries, is spectacular. But what are we to make of the spectacle? While the world watches tigers rapidly disappear, certain ‘wildlife reserves’ (in this case, we’re insinuating ‘amusement park’) breed ligers, a combination of tiger and lion. Aries is the third litter bred from this park. Liger males, because they are a hybrid offspring, are sterile and usually have shortened life spans in addition to a high rate of birth defects. Due to their size, the tiger mother can only deliver a liger by Ceasarian section. Wouldn’t the resources used to create these sterile hybrid animals with health issues be better spent on programs that promote actual tiger rehabilitation? It may not be lucrative in a pay-per-admission sense, but the cost of losing an entire species is incalculable in every way that matters. What do you think? – Global Animal
