(MILITARY ANIMALS) Thousands of goats, pigs, and other animals have died in military training exercises over the years, spurring debate between animal rights activists and the Pentagon. While the military claims that this type of training saves lives, activists say that simulators would be a more effective method. Fortunately, animal advocates scored a win this month after the Army announced it will prevent non-medical soldiers from participating in trauma training using live animals, and instead, personnel will use training mannequins, actors, and virtual simulators. Read on to learn more about the decades-long debate and what this decision means for the future. — Global Animal

(CULTURE) It comes as no surprise that animals dominated Super Bowl commercials yet again this year. With a Budweiser commercial that made everyone’s hearts melt to perhaps a hilarious Doritos commercial starring a snack-loving goat, the Baltimore Ravens weren’t the only animals winning this past weekend. Being the first Super Bowl to take place since all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. agreed not to use great apes in their ads, not one of this year’s commercials featured chimpanzees or other great apes. In addition, many commercials used computer-generated imagery CGI to portray other exotic animals. Here are just a few of this year’s favorites. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Santa Cruz Biotechnology, a supplier of antibodies to molecular biology labs worldwide, has somehow managed to hide away 841 unreported goats at their “remote barn” for biological exploitation. A tip-off led inspectors to locate the barn which held the animals, some of whom were “lame, anaemic or had protruding bones.” While most research institutions are familiar with mice, goats are seen as good sources due to their ability to generate more antibodies and have a longer lifespan. Read more to learn about this irresponsible facility and why these goats have been unsafely hoarded for their antibodies. — Global Animal
