Future Of Gestation Crates

(FARM ANIMALS) In the U.S. millions of sows live day in and day out in a space that is 2 feet wide and 7 feet long. The crates are used primarily for production levels without taking the animal’s welfare into consideration. Pregnant for the majority of their life, they only leave their gestation crates to give birth, and are returned once their babies are taken away. Read on for more on how gestation crates came to be used, why they aren’t foreseen in the future of farming, and what states have already banned them. — Global Animal

Horrific Animal Abuse At Wyoming Premium Farms

(FACTORY FARMING) The Humane Society Of The United States (HSUS) has uncovered yet another pig farm where horrendous abuses are taking place. Last February the HSUS exposed animal abuse at the Seaboard Foods and Prestage Farms. Now it’s Wyoming Premium Farms, a supplier to Tyson Foods, that’s under fire for their stomach-churning treatment of pigs. The undercover investigators had to watch the farm workers kick and punch mother pigs, kick and throw baby piglets, feed piglet testicles to their mothers for “fun,” deprive pigs of water and medical treatment among other horrifying actions. Read on to watch the graphic video and sign the petition to end this cruelty. — Global Animal

Infected Dairy Cow “No Big Deal,” Says USDA

(ANIMAL NEWS) CALIFORNIA — The USDA has confirmed that they have discovered a dairy cow infected with mad cow disease at a rendering plant for sick and diseased animals in California. They assert that there is “no cause for alarm” because no part of the animal entered the food supply, and that the plant processes these animals into only non-edible products. This cow was destroyed rather than being processed, but this report brings up more questions than it answers. How was this cow infected? What kind of products come out of these rendering plants and are they properly labeled? Read more about this dairy cow and what this case of mad cow disease means for the beef industry and our nation. — Global Animal

No Such Thing As Better Beef

(FACTORY FARMING) Eating completely sustainable meat doesn’t seem possible. Factory farming is undoubtedly destroying the environment, slaughtering unprecedented amounts of animals, and putting humans at risk of deadly diseases like E. coli and salmonella. However, sustainable farms have their own set of problems. Is this alternative better for the animals? Or is sustainable meat just easier to swallow? — Global Animal

Unscrambling The Truth Behind Egg Farming

(FACTORY FARMING) The Humane Society of the United States released a new undercover video today that looks into the abhorrent conditions at Kreider Farms, a battery cage egg production facility in Pennsylvania. Nicholas Kristof, who recently wrote on arsenic found in chickens, reviewed the footage for an opinion piece in the New York Times. With chickens crammed into cages, dead birds sometimes left for weeks, flies and rodents, and the stench of ammonia, the conditions at Kreider Farms appear to rival McDonalds ex-egg supplier, Sparboe Farms. Read on for more on this new investigation and why some factory farms refuse to reform and meet industry standards. — Global Animal
