End Horse Slaughter In The U.S.

(HORSES) For the first time since 2006, the U.S. is ready to begin the inhumane practice of slaughtering and exporting horses for human consumption. But the discovery of horse meat in beef products in several European countries over the past few months has led to a worldwide outcry by those against the killing of horses for meat, prompting lawmakers to take action. Last week, amid the widening horse meat scandal and the USDA’s announcement of a new horse slaughter facility in New Mexico, the nation’s leading animal welfare groups gathered with members of Congress on Capitol Hill to introduce the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, a new bill that would once again put an end to horse slaughter in the U.S. Read on to learn more about this potential umbrella ban and the ongoing dispute between ranchers, government officials, and animal rights activists. — Global Animal

Is Animal Advocacy Now A Crime?

(POLITICS) Animal advocates have exposed some of the biggest farm animal abuse cases to date. Now, state legislators are introducing laws that will make it more difficult for animal defenders to investigate cruelty and food safety cases. Bills of this nature are pending all across the U.S. with some going as far as making it a crime to take photographs at farming operations. Many believe the purpose of this type of legislation is to keep consumers in the dark about how their food is being produced. Horse Meat Found In Burgers

(FACTORY FARMING) A recent survey conducted by Ireland’s food safety authority (FSAI) has found traces of horse meat and DNA as well as pig DNA in hamburgers sold at supermarkets in Ireland and the UK. The food safety group randomly inspected 27 “beef” products, with 10 of which containing horse DNA and 23 with pig DNA. In addition, in one sample, horse meat accounted for approximately 29 percent of the meat content. FSAI stresses that the products do not pose a health risk, but some experts disagree. Regardless, Ireland’s Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney called the findings “totally unacceptable.” Read on to learn more about the FSAI’s concerning discovery and sign the petition to get horse meat out of hamburger in the UK. — Global Animal

Chicken Farms Turn To Oregano

(FARM) As consumers continue to demand purer foods, chickens raised for Bell & Evans over the last three years have been fed a special diet consisting of oregano oil and a pinch of cinnamon as a way to prevent the spread of bacterial diseases without relying on antibiotics. However, despite encouraging preliminary test results conducted by other experimental farmers, many are skeptical and feel there are too many unanswered questions and not enough proof that these alternatives are equally as effective as antibiotics in fighting bacteria. Read on to learn more about antibiotic-free farming in the article below. — Global Animal

Turkeys Raped By Technology For Thanksgiving

(FARM ANIMALS) With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it is necessary we re-evaluate our traditions. Each Butterball Turkey purchased for the dining room table condones cruel procedures that have forever destroyed the natural abilities of these once wild animals. In order to create the meatiest birds, farmers breed for a large breasted turkey. As a result of this superficial process, it is impossible for any factory born turkey to mate naturally. The feathered animals’ pectoral muscles are so overgrown that they can not physically connect with a turkey of the opposite sex. Continue reading to learn how farmers fight fire with fire and only worsen the cruelty inflicted on these innocent beings. — Global Animal
