Chief Saunooke Bear Park Shut Down

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Chief Saunooke Bear Park in Cherokee, North Carolina is finally being shut down following animal abuse allegations from prominent animal rights and conservation groups such as PETA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an order this month to suspend the bear pit’s exhibitor license and fine the facility $20,000 after PETA revealed that it had uncovered evidence that the park failed to provide the bears with appropriate food, veterinary care, and safe housing. Delcianna Winders, a director at PETA, expressed her hopes that the bear park will remain closed for good and that the bears will be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. But unfortunately, despite the shutdown, the bears will likely remain with their owners for the time being. Read on to learn more about the abuse allegations and sign the petition to ban exotic animal ownership in North Carolina. — Global Animal

The federal judge sided with the state, claiming exotic pet owners and breeders failed to prove that their constitutional rights were violated. Wildlife Finds Refuge At Popcorn Park

(ANIMAL SANCTUARY) NEW JERSEY — This week, over 200 abused, ill and exploited animals find solace in Fork River, New Jersey at Popcorn Park Zoo. The zoo was established gradually after the staff of a local adoption center began receiving calls concerning wildlife in distress. As the compassionate persons began rehabilitating these animals, more cages were built and the facility expanded to its current, seven acre reserve of land. Popcorn Park Zoo also has a large adoption center for animals from overcrowded shelters. The zoo and kennel run mostly on donations which counteract the cost of the staff and does not include the cost for supplies and food. The amazing organization is part of the statewide Associated Humane Societies and sees 75,000 visitors a year who can feed air-popped popcorn to the animals. Continue reading to learn about these amazing facilities and see how you can help. — Global Animal

Animal Intervention Saves Captive Wildlife (VIDEO)

(ACTIVISM) Premiering today, Tuesday, October 2 at 9 pm, NatGeo Wild’s new television show Animal Intervention will feature animal advocates Alison Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s daughter), Donald Schultz, and Billy McNamara who investigate particular cases of wildlife owners who keep exotic animals in harmful environments and intervene in order to relocate these animals to safe animal sanctuaries. Some of the owners breed their animals, further crowding their facilities and increasing the overall population of exotics living in captivity. The show also addresses the appalling conditions at roadside zoos, private ranches, circuses, and magic shows, where animals are exceptionally maltreated. — Global Animal
