Romanian Gangster’s Exotic Pets Seized

(EXOTIC PETS) A Romanian man named Ion Balint—also known as Nutzu the Pawnbroker—was indicted this week for leading a criminal gang. Authorities seized his four privately owned lions and two bears on Wednesday and suspect the criminal used the wild animals to intimidate rivals. Environmental authorities and the Vier Pfoten animal welfare charity say the wild animals will be temporarily housed in a zoo and possibly relocated to South Africa. Read on to learn more about the investigation. — Global Animal

Chief Saunooke Bear Park Shut Down

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Chief Saunooke Bear Park in Cherokee, North Carolina is finally being shut down following animal abuse allegations from prominent animal rights and conservation groups such as PETA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an order this month to suspend the bear pit’s exhibitor license and fine the facility $20,000 after PETA revealed that it had uncovered evidence that the park failed to provide the bears with appropriate food, veterinary care, and safe housing. Delcianna Winders, a director at PETA, expressed her hopes that the bear park will remain closed for good and that the bears will be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. But unfortunately, despite the shutdown, the bears will likely remain with their owners for the time being. Ohio Court Upholds New Exotic Pet Law

(EXOTIC PETS) OHIO — On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge George Smith ruled to uphold Ohio’s new restrictions on exotic pets after several exotic animal owners sued the state over the law, which was enacted after a Zanesville man released 48 of his exotics before committing suicide last year. The federal judge sided with the state, claiming exotic pet owners and breeders failed to prove that their constitutional rights were violated. Ultimately, the court said the law is in the best interest of the public and public safety. Read on to learn about the details of the three-day trial testimony. — Global Animal

India’s Leopards Killed By The Week

(POACHING) INDIA — A report conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature last month revealed that at least four leopards are killed every week in India, skinned for their fur or even mauled for their bones. Already, humans have recently been posing as a major threat to these endangered animals through exhausting the abundance of forests’ resources. While these leopards’ habitats have been wrecked, the population of their prey – unable to survive without the goods of the forest – have simultaneously decreased. Leopards are suffering in more ways than one at the hands of humans. — Global Animal

(ACTIVISM) Premiering today, Tuesday, October 2 at 9 pm, NatGeo Wild’s new television show Animal Intervention will feature animal advocates Alison Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s daughter), Donald Schultz, and Billy McNamara who investigate particular cases of wildlife owners who keep exotic animals in harmful environments and intervene in order to relocate these animals to safe animal sanctuaries. Some of the owners breed their animals, further crowding their facilities and increasing the overall population of exotics living in captivity. The show also addresses the appalling conditions at roadside zoos, private ranches, circuses, and magic shows, where animals are exceptionally maltreated. — Global Animal

Ohio Says No To Backyard Bears And Other Exotic Pets

(ANIMAL POLITICS) Ohio’s exotic animal law went into effect on September 5, ruling against the acquisition of exotic animals and creating new standards for currently owned exotics. The decision is in response to last year’s horrific accident when Zanesville resident Terry Thompson released his menagerie of wild animals into the surrounding area, causing unprepared law enforcement to kill 50 of the animals in the name of public safety. The selfish attainment of exotic animals is dangerous to both humans and animals, leading to accidents that are easily avoidable. With Ohio’s important decision, only six states have yet to outlaw the taming and private ownership of exotic animals, and until they reevaluate their stance, wild animals will continue to be harmed for reasons outside their control.
