Actor Lays Down The Law On Seal Hunting

(CELEBRITY ACTIVISM) Actor Jude Law is joining celebrity activists like Ke$ha and Sarah McLachlan and speaking out against the annual Canadian seal slaughter. The Sherlock Holmes star recently teamed up with PETA and wrote a letter urging the World Trade Organization (WTO) to uphold the EU’s ban on seal products. The handsome Brit wrote, “I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. Even local sentiment is turning, and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.” The WTO’s final hearing on the issue will be held on April 29. Read on to find out what Law proposes would be a better solution for sealers and seals. — Global Animal

Advocates Fight To “Keep Cows On Grass”

(FARM) In October, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) launched “Keep Cows on Grass,” its first Europe-wide, ongoing campaign calling for an end to industrial dairy farming. The WSPA, along with Ben & Jerry’s and Compassion in World Farmingwant to bring attention to the fact that cows are vanishing from the rolling pastures of the European landscape. The WSPA is asking consumers to put pressure on retailers by asking questions about the origins of their milk and the welfare of the animals that supply it. By doing this, we can support for this “Better Dairy”  campaign for humane, sustainable, pasture-based systems as well as counter the spread of the burgeoning myth that, as one dairy representative told a BBC reporter, “cows do not belong in fields.” Read on for more information regarding the growth of industrial “mega dairies.” — Global Animal

European Lawmakers: Foie Gras Is So Passé

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) Earlier this month, a group of European Members of Parliament called for a controversial ban on the sale and production of foie gras, an infamous French delicacy made by force-feeding ducks and geese. Even with the recent California precedent forbidding the consumption of foie gras in the state, French authorities in support of this inhumane industry are defending the production of foie gras, claiming it an important part of the “French gastronomic heritage.” We agree that these callous bureaucrats need to put their hearts before their wallets and put an end this this inhumanity. Barbaric Bullfighting Bankrolled

(ANIMAL ABUSE) SPAIN — Despite one region of Spain deciding to abolish bullfighting within the last year, another much smaller town in Spain is actually funding the inhumane act. The residents of Guijo de Galisteo took a vote last weekend, asking the mayor to spend €10,000 on bullfighting rather than creating jobs for the already poverty-stricken, largely unemployed region. While awareness about the inhumane practice of bullfighting has increased, it still no doubt lives on. Read on to uncover the staggering numbers voting in favor of bullfighting. — Global Animal
