Anti-Mining Mountain Man Dies At 66 (VIDEO)

(CONSERVATION) WEST VIRGINIA — Longtime environmental hero and activist Larry Gibson died at the age of 66 on Sunday night. Born into a family of coal miners, Gibson spent his whole life fighting for the preservation of mountaintops consistently destroyed by coal mining companies. Since the 1980s, over 500 mountaintops have been devastated throughout middle American states, including Gibson’s home state of West Virginia. His resistance spawned wide support and the cause is now discussed at a national level. Conserving mountaintops, forest and streams also maintains the habitats of many species of wildlife, including the endangered Bald Eagle and Cheat Mountain Salamander. The worldwide dependency on unnatural energy poses a threat to wildlife residents of these landscapes. Water shortages are already starting to form into a global food crisis, leaving around 18 million people in Western Africa hungry. Scientists believe that a solution to the problem is a vegetarian diet. Instead of watering crops to feed animals that in turn are consumed by humans, we can conserve water by simply eating plants. Many New Species In Amazon, But Discovery Is A Threat

(ANIMAL DISCOVERY) PERU – While the Peruvian Amazon yields a new bird every year and a new mammal every four, this good news is tempered by the fact that these species are not discovered by expeditions, but by workers who are digging exploration sites for oil, mining or lumber companies. Their discovery is a result of habitat destruction. So the question arises, will they be around long enough for us to get to know them? Again and again we see the unbreakable connection between an animal’s survival and the world they inhabit. We must protect both. – Global Animal
