What On Earth Is Earth Day?

(EARTH DAY) The 1960′s brought about a ton of changes for the American people, including protecting our environment. Brought into effect by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day sparked a worldwide rally to appreciate, protect, and teach about the importance of a healthy environment. From compassionate efforts indlucing park clean-ups, teach-ins, and tree-plating parties, to long-term commitments like caring for trees planted in honor of Earth Day, Senator Nelson has inspired people around the world to become involved with the environment—and in the U.S., the number has reached up to around 80 percent of the population. Read on for the true story about what Earth Day is all about, and what you can do to take part in this important day of the year. — Global Animal

How Your Poop Makes Fish Crazy

(GREEN) After you flush have you ever wondered, “Where does it go?” The answer: down the toilet, through a sewage filtration system, into the ocean, and through the gills of unsuspecting fish. That’s right. Fish are breathing in your excretions, which include the drugs you take. Drug residue is often detected downstream from sewage treatment plants. This pharmaceutical waste, which is not properly removed or deactivated from wastewater, often changes the behavior of the exposed fish. They begin to act a little crazy, by eating more and by leaving their schools to scavenge for food on their own. This behavior may seem diminutive, but it can have a domino effect that can lead to ecological disaster. Read more to learn about this environmental issue. — Global Animal

Raccoons With Brain Cancer Could Pose Threat To Humans

(WILDLIFE) A recent surge of fatal brain cancer in raccoons on the U.S. West Coast has prompted an investigation, given the frequent encounters between the animals and humans. A new virus is thought to be the cause for the outbreak and there are no current signs that it could be passed on to humans, but researchers are still nevertheless concerned. Seeing that raccoons thrive in neighborhood settings, this outbreak could be another sign that our environment is in trouble. Meatless Monday Goes Global

(VEGETARIAN) After the UK’s Telegraph recently reported that China now consumes twice as much meat as America, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has decided to promote Meatless Monday in an effort to protect the environment, animals, and people. To participate in this international campaign, people should just take one day of the week off from eating meat. According to the HSUS, if every American cut meat out of their diet every Monday, an estimate of 1.4 billion animals would no longer be factory farmed. Anti-Mining Mountain Man Dies At 66 (VIDEO)

(CONSERVATION) WEST VIRGINIA — Longtime environmental hero and activist Larry Gibson died at the age of 66 on Sunday night. Born into a family of coal miners, Gibson spent his whole life fighting for the preservation of mountaintops consistently destroyed by coal mining companies. Since the 1980s, over 500 mountaintops have been devastated throughout middle American states, including Gibson’s home state of West Virginia. His resistance spawned wide support and the cause is now discussed at a national level. Conserving mountaintops, forest and streams also maintains the habitats of many species of wildlife, including the endangered Bald Eagle and Cheat Mountain Salamander. The worldwide dependency on unnatural energy poses a threat to wildlife residents of these landscapes. Read more to learn about Gibson’s inspiring lifelong cause against mining companies. — Global Animal

Vegetarian Diet Could Save The World

(SCIENCE) According to leading water scientists, the continued increase of the world’s population will force more people to adopt a vegetarian diet. Water shortages are already starting to form into a global food crisis, leaving around 18 million people in Western Africa hungry. Scientists believe that a solution to the problem is a vegetarian diet. Instead of watering crops to feed animals that in turn are consumed by humans, we can conserve water by simply eating plants.
