Lovestruck Tiger Chooses Freedom

(ZOOS) INDIA — A wild Bengal tiger has chosen his freedom over a life of imprisonment. Last April, workers at India’s Nandankanan Zoo witnessed the male tiger walk onto the zoo’s grounds, apparently attracted to the zoo’s female tiger. Under the influence of love, the male found himself caged by officials after wandering into the female’s enclosure. The tiger remained at the zoo for a month before he outsmarted employees once again, escaping his enclosure to journey back into the wild. This incident could leave zoo officials in a tight situation. If this tiger could escape, what’s stopping other animals from doing the same? India Says Poach The Poachers

(ENDANGERED SPECIES) NEW DELHI — The Maharashtra government has taken an uncompromising stand against poaching, passing a new law that allows forest guards to defend tigers and other wildlife against illegal hunting, even if it results in the injury or death of poachers. India has the second largest tiger population in the world, and this will be their 42nd tiger reserve. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, tiger numbers have dropped by about 95 percent in the last century, and there are only about 3,000 tigers left in the wild. There are more tigers in captivity in the United States than there are in their natural habitat, therefore protective measures for these majestic cats are vital. Hope For Tigers?

(TIGERS) In the past ten years, the number of tigers living in the wild has decreased from 10,000 to an estimated 3,000. Duke University student Blake Bohlig warns that tigers are quickly approaching extinction despite conservation efforts and urges humans to “step it up.” With deforestation and poaching being the two main causes of the decline, Bohlig offers a seemingly simple solution to pay individuals to protect tigers rather than poach them in a means of supporting their families.
