Anti-Antibiotics: You Are What You Eat

(ANIMAL WELFARE) The phrase, “you are what you eat,” may be more frightening than ever before. The agriculture industry hasn’t exactly been known for their conscientious treatment of livestock, but recent missteps might mean a great deal for your health as well. The majority of animals raised for food are forced to take a number of antibiotics with the sole purpose of making the animals larger, but not necessarily healthier. This incessant use of antibiotics allows bacteria to evolve, leading to a number of superbugs like salmonella and E. coli. These superbugs are extremely resilient to antibiotics used on livestock, and often times make their way onto our dinner tables. The ethical treatment of livestock remains an important issue for the animals’ health as well as our own. Read the article below to find out more on how the treatment of livestock directly affects you. — Global Animal

Horse Meat Found In Burgers

(FACTORY FARMING) A recent survey conducted by Ireland’s food safety authority (FSAI) has found traces of horse meat and DNA as well as pig DNA in hamburgers sold at supermarkets in Ireland and the UK. The food safety group randomly inspected 27 “beef” products, with 10 of which containing horse DNA and 23 with pig DNA. In addition, in one sample, horse meat accounted for approximately 29 percent of the meat content. FSAI stresses that the products do not pose a health risk, but some experts disagree. Regardless, Ireland’s Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney called the findings “totally unacceptable.” Read on to learn more about the FSAI’s concerning discovery and sign the petition to get horse meat out of hamburger in the UK. — Global Animal

Meatless Monday Goes Global

(VEGETARIAN) After the UK’s Telegraph recently reported that China now consumes twice as much meat as America, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has decided to promote Meatless Monday in an effort to protect the environment, animals, and people. To participate in this international campaign, people should just take one day of the week off from eating meat. According to the HSUS, if every American cut meat out of their diet every Monday, an estimate of 1.4 billion animals would no longer be factory farmed. Slaughterhouse Gets Away With Cruelty, Re-Opens

(ANIMAL ABUSE) CALIFORNIA —  The USDA shut down Central Vally Meat Company earlier this month when an undercover video by the animal organization Compassion Over Killing showed cows suffocated, shot, poked and prodded repeatedly. One “spent” dairy cow was shocked more than forty times. The slaughterhouse re-opened for business on Monday, causing concern among animal advocates. It’s hard to believe that in such a short amount of time the meat company implemented enough long-term changes to follow federal regulations about the treatment of animals. Vegan Diet: Longer, Healthier, More Energized Lifestyle

(COMPASSIONATE LIVING) The cruelty towards animals that happen within the walls of a slaughterhouse is sickening. Livestock production is also a major cause of land degradation, pollution, and climate change. Becoming vegan not only opposes cruelty, but also is a treat for your body. — Global Animal

Activists Bully French Food Banks for Taking Bullfighting Meat

(ANIMAL RIGHTS) French food banks are receiving harsh criticism from displeased animal rights supporters after receiving meat from bulls killed in bullfights. Activists such as Thierry Hely, spokesman for France’s FLAC anti-bullfighting association, condemn the food banks acceptance of the meat, which came from “particularly revolting suffering.” This argument over meat allotment should not overshadow the underlying matter: bullfighting. This inhumane and despicable form of entertainment inflicts suffering on the animals involved and should be put to an end. Read on to learn more about this recent controversy. — Global Animal
