(ANIMAL RESCUE) While Oklahoma residents have only just begun picking up the pieces following the massive tornado that tore through the region earlier this week, it’s encouraging to see that miracles can and do happen. One such moment took place during a CBS interview with an elderly woman named Barbara Garcia, whose home was completely destroyed by the colossal tornado. But her greatest loss was her missing dog, who she tried so hard to protect during the disaster. As Mrs. Garcia told her heartbreaking story, the news crew noticed a dog’s head poking out from beneath the rubble. (ANIMAL PICTURES) It comes as no surprise that Jon Stewart is quite the pit bull lover. “The Daily Show” host has stood up for the breed on numerous occasions and is the proud parent of three rescued pit bulls, including a three-legged pooch named Champ. Not to mention, “The Daily Show” set has reportedly become “a dog nirvana,” with more than a dozen pups roaming the office on any given work day. How One Rescue Dog Survived Against All Odds (VIDEO)

(GLOBAL ANIMAL)—Arwen, a 10-year-old pit bull mix, was one of 89 dogs rescued from a hoarder in the Mojave Desert. Along with the others she was kept in poor outdoor conditions. During the cold winter season the dogs had no shelter, and barely any food or water. Karma Rescue, who also got other animal organizations involved, stepped in and began their tough work of relocating the dogs to safe homes. But everyone seemed to be especially touched by Arwen, who was so unsocialized and had so little interaction with humans that she had no idea how to respond to them. Arwen had almost no teeth because she chewed on the hoarder’s metal fence, and she had a very troubling eye condition brought on by the constant raw exposure to the rough weather. Alex, a volunteer, decided to foster Arwen until her health improved, but very quickly fell head over heels in love with the sweet dog, and decided to permanently adopt her. Naki’o, The World’s First Bionic Dog (GALLERY)

(DOG PICTURES) After becoming the first dog to be fitted with a complete set of prosthetic paws that work naturally and allow him to run, jump, and swim, Naki’o has been given a new leash on life. The mixed-breed puppy was abandoned at a foreclosed Nebraska home and was eventually discovered alone in the cellar, with his paws and tail frozen into a puddle of icy water. Fortunately for Naki’o, he met an extremely compassionate veterinarian assistant named Christie Pace of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who was looking to help an animal in need. ”I have a soft spot for rescue animals in general. I was looking for something different, unique. I wanted to make more of a difference than a regular dog. I knew I could help him out,” she told ABC. Railroad Rover Rescued By Engineer

(ANIMAL RESCUE) Banjo, a 10-month-old terrier mix who was rescued by a train engineer after being tied to train tracks, has become quite the superstar since his touching story surfaced earlier this week. After an elderly man tied the pooch to railroad tracks in Mecca, a Southern California desert town, Banjo was fortunately rescued by an “eagle-eyed engineer,” according to animal control officials. Last Hurricane Sandy Dog Gets New Home

(TOUCHING TALE) Approximately 500 pets left homeless after Hurricane Sandy were brought to the Pet Emergency Shelter in New York’s Nassau County. All of these animals were eventually returned to their guardians except for Bruno, a 7-year-old male Rottweiler. The Nassau County SPCA posted an add on their Facebook page seeking a new home for the adorable pooch. The response was overwhelming, and the Facebook page was shared over 900 times.
