Basket Of Cuteness: Pit Bull Photo Goes Viral

The image and it’s ironic title present a major contradiction between the truth about pit bulls and the public’s negative perception of the breed as violent and aggressive. Hollywood’s Bought & Abandoned Fad Dogs

(ANIMAL ACTORS) From the silver screen to the viral menagerie of animals on YouTube, canine actors and other popularized pups inevitably fuel society’s fascination with certain dog breeds. At the same time, the opposite can also occur, where a film or television show portrays a dog in a negative light and depopularizes that particular breed. “Every time Hollywood makes a dog movie, the breed goes to hell,” says one caretaker of bouviers des Flandres dogs. Animals don’t always meet potential guardian’s expectations. And when their pet doesn’t behave like the animal portrayed on a television show or in a particular film, rescue organizations and animal shelters become flooded with popularized breeds. Read on to learn more about the impact that famous dogs in the media have on particular breeds. — Global Animal

Westminster Dog Show Poisoning

(DOG SHOWS) There has been much speculation lately over whether a prized pet was deliberately poisoned while competing at the Westminster Kennel Club show earlier this month. Lynette Blue, the dog’s guardian, believes her 3-year-old prizewinning Samoyed named Cruz swallowed poison while at the show in Lakewood, Colorado, as his symptoms were consistent with dogs who ingest rat or mouse poison. And while the cause of death still remains unclear, Cruz’s handler, Robert Chaffin, believes extreme animal rights activists may have been to blame. But PETA co-founder and president Ingrid Newkirk said “it makes no sense whatsoever” that an animal rights activist would ever harm an animal. Others speculate jealousy between competitors could be the culprit. On the other hand, questions have also been raised regarding dogs shows in general, and particularly the American Kennel Club’s involvement (i.e. it will not permit neutered or spayed dogs in shows, but a debarked animal is allowed). To read more on this case, read the New York Times article below. — Global Animal
