Australia Too Easy On Animal Abuse?

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) AUSTRALIA — Many Australian activists may be starting to question how well their government handles disturbingly gruesome acts of animal cruelty. Although the country’s jail sentences for aggravated cruelty towards animals range from 2 to 5 years, the full penalties are rarely invoked, with some abusers getting off without serving any jail time at all. Perhaps the most disturbing knowledge surrounding these issues is the fact that extreme violence towards animals often later manifests in extreme violence toward humans. If the Australian Government sticks to tougher penalties for animal abusers, it could very well diminish the number of severe abuse cases the country faces. Michigan Bill Punishes Animal Abusers

(ANIMAL LAWS) A recently proposed Michigan bill has the potential to make nationwide history as it would create the first state registry for convicted animal abusers, much like the Country’s current registry for sex offenders. Cattaraugus County SPCA: A “Slow-Kill” Shelter?

(ANIMAL SHELTERS) Contrary to its claim to be a no-kill shelter, the Cattaraugus County SPCA in Olean, New York, is considered to be a perversion of no-kill by a number of former volunteers, board members, and concerned citizens. In fact, many are claiming the shelter is one of the more dangerous places for an animal to reside. Kelly Chaffee, former CCSPCA President and Board Member, has been quick to say that “the facility has been no-kill since 1985.” But many maintain that just because the animals are not euthanized at the shelter, does not mean that they are not emotionally and physically suffering. There is substantial proof regarding the neglect that these innocent animals suffer every single day. Animals at this facility are said to be confined in kennels for years, without socialization, veterinary care, or opportunities for placement into loving homes. Photographer Shows Compawssion For The Underdog

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 to 7 million pets enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 to 4 million are euthanized—that’s one every six and a half seconds. In addition, millions more are abandoned, only to suffer from illness or injury before their untimely death. However, many are fighting to change these statistics. One is photographer Frank Bruynbroek, who dedicated 15 years of his life into the creation of Compawssion: Portraits of Rescued Dogs. The touching collection of black and white, film portraits of rescued dogs shows audiences what it means to be a dog who has been abandoned and then rescued. — Global Animal

New Bill Forces Animal Abusers to Pay

(ANIMAL LAWS) Oftentimes it seems like animal abusers don’t suffer any consequences for their actions. But the state of Pennsylvania is making sure that those who mistreat animals pay an actual price. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill titled HB 82 which declares that the cost of seized animals will be provided for by those they were taken away from. This should be a great relief to animal rescues and shelters who, up until now, had to pay great sums of money from their own funds to care for seized animals. Hopefully other states will follow.
