Radical Activists ’269 Life’ Arrested In Israel

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) Tel Aviv police have arrested ten animal rights activists for scattering dead cow and fish heads around the Gush Dan area. The heads showed up in public places like water fountains where water was dyed blood red—most likely symbolizing animal slaughter. The actions were allegedly taken by a radical group called ’269life,’ who are known for branding themselves in public to show solidarity with farm animals. Part of the group’s message is, “No animal should be exploited to satisfy the selfish needs and whimsical desires of humans, and that is why we chose to use the industry’s own method of objectifying living beings as this symbolic means to convey our idea.” None of the suspects have a prior criminal record, and right now they are not admitting to any connection with these acts. It’s Time To Meet Your Meat

(HUMANE FARMING) WASHINGTON — Consumers, pay no attention to the carnage behind the meaty curtain. Recently, legislation has hit a number of states, which could potentially incriminate activists who take undercover pictures of slaughterhouse conditions. Although it’s hardly surprising that the agriculture industry is critical of these activists, the real issues rest with the safety of the public and the humane treatment of livestock. Public access to covert pictures could, at the very least, educate people on what exactly they are eating. Read the article below in order to find out more on the hardships facing the meat industry in relation to public knowledge. — Global Animal

Holy Cow! Ryan Gosling Stands Up For Cattle

(CELEBRITY ACTIVISM) Just in case you needed one more reason to fangirl over Ryan Gosling all day, it turns out The Notebook star is not just a pretty face, but also someone with a compassionate spirit. This time, Gosling recently teamed up with PETA and penned a letter to the National Milk Producers Federation asking for the termination of dehorning—a painful practice of “burning horn tissue or gouging cows’ horns out of their heads, often without the use of any painkillers.” Read on to find out what Gosling suggests should be the alternative of this awful practice. — Global Animal

Keep Bison In Montana—Fight For Restoration!

(WILDLIFE) In the vast grasslands of Montana, free-roaming wild bison are back at the center of a new debate as they compete with cattle for space in the rangeland. Because cattle now consume and dominate the grasses that bison originally lived off of, environmentalists and Indian tribes have been working at a political level to restore the bison to portions of their former home. However, legislators who represent livestock-growing regions have attempted to block the restoration plan through inhumane bills such as one proposed by Republican State Senator John Brenden, which would allow landowners to shoot wandering bison, prevent the transfer of the animals anywhere in the state, and create a new bison hunting season. Read the article below and discover important details in the debate between preserving the ancestral land of the bison and, in what Senator John Brenden believes to be, “bringing back the dinosaurs” to Montana. — Global Animal

Making Their Mark: Activists Brand Themselves

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) In an attempt to portray the pain that dairy cattle endure during branding, animal activists and protesters are now branding themselves publicly with the number 269. The number represents a tribute to a calf they encountered on a farm. Becky Folkard, the woman who will be performing the branding, states, “If one person goes away and researches a vegan lifestyle because of this, it will have been worth it.” PETA approves of Folkard and her protest, which will take place on March 31 in central London. Read on to learn more about the activists’ bold efforts. Does human branding push animal rights too far? Let us know what you think in the comments below. — Global Animal

Mad Cow Testing No Longer Necessary

(FARM) The Food Standards Agency has advised ministers that routine BSE (more commonly known as mad cow disease) testing on the carcasses of healthy cattle slaughtered for food is no longer necessary. The agency board says testing of healthy cattle is no longer necessary as long as other existing safety controls be enforced vigilantly. Other safeguards, such as removal of the most risky parts of the animals from food and banning animal protein in cattle feed, should be more than sufficient to protect consumers from unsafe consumption. Advocates Fight To “Keep Cows On Grass”

(FARM) In October, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) launched “Keep Cows on Grass,” its first Europe-wide, ongoing campaign calling for an end to industrial dairy farming. The WSPA, along with Ben & Jerry’s and Compassion in World Farmingwant to bring attention to the fact that cows are vanishing from the rolling pastures of the European landscape. The WSPA is asking consumers to put pressure on retailers by asking questions about the origins of their milk and the welfare of the animals that supply it. By doing this, we can support for this “Better Dairy”  campaign for humane, sustainable, pasture-based systems as well as counter the spread of the burgeoning myth that, as one dairy representative told a BBC reporter, “cows do not belong in fields.” Read on for more information regarding the growth of industrial “mega dairies.” — Global Animal
