Slaughterhouse Gets Away With Cruelty, Re-Opens

(ANIMAL ABUSE) CALIFORNIA —  The USDA shut down Central Vally Meat Company earlier this month when an undercover video by the animal organization Compassion Over Killing showed cows suffocated, shot, poked and prodded repeatedly. One “spent” dairy cow was shocked more than forty times. The slaughterhouse re-opened for business on Monday, causing concern among animal advocates. It’s hard to believe that in such a short amount of time the meat company implemented enough long-term changes to follow federal regulations about the treatment of animals. Horrific Abuse At In-N-Out-Burger Supplier (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL NEWS) The animal rights group Compassion Over Killing revealed a shocking video of their undercover investigation into Central Valley Meat Co., a California slaughterhouse that supplies meat to fast food chain In-N-Out-Burger and the National School Lunch Program. The video shows employees prodding and electrically shocking cows unable to walk. Crippled cows are repeatedly shot in the head by workers or suffocated, direct violations of federal regulations. The USDA shut down the slaughterhouse and is now investigating into the inhumane treatment of these animals while In-N-Out-Burger reportedly canceled their contract. (FARM TECHNOLOGY) Richard Conrad surprised the farming world last year when he shelled out $70,000 for cow water beds. The Conrad dairy farm believed that if you make cows more comfortable and happy they will produce more and better quality milk. Conrad has been very happy with the results and now other farmers are following suit with even quirkier methods to make the cows happy. Farmers are spending money on chiropractors and playing classical music all in an effort to please their bovine partners. This really seems to be a revolution in the farming industry, which usually disappoints with its cruel treatment of animals. It’s very heartening to see farmers who actually understand that milking cows is a partnership that requires both sides to be happy in order to yield the best results.— Global Animal

High Court Challenge Granted To British Badger Group

(ANIMAL NEWS) LONDON — The Badger Trust received official permission to review the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’s (Defra) inhumane pilot cull program earlier this year. The proposed badger cull — which was announced last year as a solution to the spread of tuberculosis in cattle — is losing steam after Wales decided against against the cruel act. Cow Escapes Slaughterhouse, Finds Sanctuary

(TOUCHING TALE) NEW YORK — A cow escaped from a New Jersey slaughterhouse Tuesday night and was found battered and dehydrated by animal control. The owner of the slaughterhouse allowed the animal to be taken to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, where he can live out the rest of his days as a free cow.
