Prince William Stands Up For Elephants (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL TRADE) In a video addressed to more than 2,000 delegates at the 12-day Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in Bangkok, Britain’s Prince William calls upon our world’s leaders for stronger action on the worldwide illegal ivory trade. In the video released earlier this week, the 30-year-old Duke of Cambridge urges, “We must do more to combat this serious crime if we are to reverse the current alarming trends. If not, we could soon see some populations of these creatures, or even an entire species, disappear from the wild.” Fortunately, at the opening of the conference, Thailand’s Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, also promised to amend Thai laws that currently allow for elephant tusks to be smuggled into Thai and Chinese markets. Lawmakers Roar To Save King Of The Jungle

(POLITICS) Last month, politicians took action toward finalizing the much needed preservation of big cats in Africa. A bipartisan group of 44 members of Congress sent a letter to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service urging them to preserve the African lion under the Endangered Species Act. It’s about time Washington finally decided to step in and help, because in the past 30 years alone, the population of Africa’s lions has been essentially cut in half due to an importation of lion “trophies,” such as lion skins and their parts, with the United States as a the clear leader in importation. Wood Bison Reintroduced To Alaska

(WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) ANCHORAGE — By the early 20th century, wild wood bison had completely vanished for reasons still unclear to scientists. Yet, under an agreement announced last week, North America’s largest living land mammals could roam the Alaskan lower Yukon River area by 2014. Currently, Canadian officials have rebuilt their wild wood bison population to approximately 9,000. And while the animal is classified as threatened, the population will be managed by Alaska state wildlife officials, who ultimately plan to allow limited hunting. Montana Wolf Hunting In Question

(WOLVES) With the Northwestern U.S. becoming a wolf slaughterhouse, District Judge Brenda Gilbert will now decide whether or not wolf hunting should continue outside of Yellowstone National Park. Thousands Of Baby Turtles Released (VIDEO)

(WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) BOLIVIA — In an attempt to boost the region’s turtle population and ultimately rescue the species, thousands of turtle hatchlings were recently released into a river in Bolivia. Because these animals are extensively hunted for their meat and eggs, South American turtle populations have drastically fallen due to excessive hunting. More than 120,000 Yellow-spotted Amazon River turtles and South American river turtles—which can reach up to a meter in length—were released into the Amazonian river as part of a project to eventually release 3.8 million baby turtles in Bolivia and Brazil. Take a look at these baby turtles take their first steps across the sand. — Global Animal
