Actor Lays Down The Law On Seal Hunting

(CELEBRITY ACTIVISM) Actor Jude Law is joining celebrity activists like Ke$ha and Sarah McLachlan and speaking out against the annual Canadian seal slaughter. The Sherlock Holmes star recently teamed up with PETA and wrote a letter urging the World Trade Organization (WTO) to uphold the EU’s ban on seal products. The handsome Brit wrote, “I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. Even local sentiment is turning, and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.” The WTO’s final hearing on the issue will be held on April 29. Harp Seals Face Slaughter At Aquarium

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Two six-month-old harp seal pups are scheduled to be killed this Saturday September 15, when the Aquarium des Iles in Quebec, Canada closes for the winter. The two pups, Zak and Mika, were taken as newborns from the wild this spring by Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO-MPO) and placed on display for the summer. The aquarium accepted the young seals despite knowing they would not be released back into the wild at the end of the season, but instead slaughtered in the name of ‘research.’ — Global Animal

Photos Capture Animal Abuse In New Light

There is also a direct correlation between animal abuse, domestic violence and other crimes. Yet animal abusers still go largely unpunished. Photographer Nicolas Wickstrom attempts to take us into the dark world of animal cruelty by substituting people in situations that involve the mistreatment of animals. Canadian TV Rejects PETA Seal Hunt Commercial

(SEAL HUNTING) CANADA — The Television Bureau of Canada declared PETA new anti-seal hunt commercial too graphic for television. They are demanding two scenes be deleted from the commercial, one of a sealer clubbing a seal, and another of a seal coughing up blood after being hit. While the images are graphic, it’s nothing viewers haven’t seen on a TV show before. It’s just worse because it isn’t acting, it’s the reality of a barbaric practice that’s long over due to be banned. Read on for more on PETA’s stand against seal hunts. — Global Animal

“Seal Wars”: Slaughter On Skeleton Coast (VIDEO)

(SEA SHEPHERD) On June 8, Animal Planet will air Seal Wars, a one-hour documentary capturing Sea Shepherd’s efforts to stop Nambia’s notorious seal slaughter. Although the footage is under wraps, the animal rights organization said that the Nambian government believed Sea Shepherd breached their National Security and had the navy, army, and police working to keep the massacre hidden. Singer Proposes Plan To End Seal Hunting

(CELEBRITY NEWS) CANADA — The end of Canadian seal hunting is coming to an end. PETA and Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan contacted Prime Minister Stephan Harper with a proposed exit strategy for seal hunters, suggesting that the government buy out the sealers. With the European Union standing by its ban on seal products, and Russia’s recent ban, 90% of Canada’s seal product exports have now been eliminated. Read on for more on McLachlan’s interesting proposition to end seal hunting for good. — Global Animal

Russia To Baby Seals: Keep Your Fur

(ANIMAL WELFARE) RUSSIA — With what seems to be a promising step in the right direction Russia has declared that it will no longer buy imported seal skins from Canada. Russia’s support on the issue is desperately needed to end the barbaric practice of clubbing seals for their fur, since they are one of its biggest purchasers. If the reports are indeed true we can only hope that this victory is the last one needed to bring this heinous Canadian trade to its demise. — Global Animal
