Shark Fin Shops Try To Hide Their Trade

(ANIMAL NEWS) Shark fin traders have taken to the rooftops of Hong Kong to sun dry their product in an effort to avoid the opinions of the uneasy street public below, according to new photos taken by environmental campaigner Gary Stokes. But is the public scrutiny of tourists and locals the real reason these traders have made the move from the street to the roof? Despite the disbelief of the president of the Hong Kong Sharks Fin Trade Merchants Association, Stokes believes this to be true, as Hong Kong citizens have shown a decrease in their approval of this delicacy. Each year, around 75 million sharks are killed solely for their fins. Read more about this inhumane act and give us your opinion on why these traders have chosen to retreat to the rooftops in the comment section below. — Global Animal

China Finds Antibiotic In Panda Blood

(PANDAS) Although there are only 1,600 giant pandas currently left in the wild, scientists in China have nonetheless undergone efforts to manufacture giant panda blood and retrieve a potent antibiotic called cathelicidin-AM. Unlike other well-known antibiotics which take more then six hours to kill bacteria, cathelicidin-AM can do the job in less than an hour. Although the team of scientists have figured out a way to synthesize the compound artificially in a lab, the fact that this highly endangered species is being poked and prodded at for scientific means is not acceptable under any circumstance. PETA Says No To China’s Animal Testing

(ANIMAL TESTING) Earlier this year, it was discovered that beauty powerhouses Avon, Estee Lauder, and Mary Kay had been secretly paying for Chinese officials to test their products on animals. Although companies in China are required by law to pay for tests on animals in order to market their cosmetics, many animal advocates, as well as PETA, felt that these proclaimed “cruelty-free” skincare brands were misleading the public. Deservingly, boycotts against the beauty giants followed suit. However, the companies continued to sell their products in China, and inevitably, animal testing continued. Meatless Monday Goes Global

(VEGETARIAN) After the UK’s Telegraph recently reported that China now consumes twice as much meat as America, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has decided to promote Meatless Monday in an effort to protect the environment, animals, and people. India’s Leopards Killed By The Week

(POACHING) INDIA — A report conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature last month revealed that at least four leopards are killed every week in India, skinned for their fur or even mauled for their bones. Already, humans have recently been posing as a major threat to these endangered animals through exhausting the abundance of forests’ resources. While these leopards’ habitats have been wrecked, the population of their prey – unable to survive without the goods of the forest – have simultaneously decreased. Leopards are suffering in more ways than one at the hands of humans. — Global Animal

“Moon Bear”: Bear Bile Industry Exposed

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) CHINA — When Chinese pharmacists claimed that forcing a hole into a bear’s abdomen was as easy as taking water from a tap, an irate animal activist responded: “Why don’t you go and extract bile yourself. Then you can tell us how good you feel.” A species of black bear, also called the Moon Bear for the white, crescent shaped patch on its chest, is quarantined for the so called medicinal effects of its stomach bile. These bears are contained in small cages and left with a permanent hole in their abdomen for the bile to drip out. Shark Fins Not Allowed To Fly In Hong Kong

(ANIMAL TRADE) HONG KONG — The increasing demand for shark fin in China is contributing to the worldwide decline in the shark population. Hong Kong accounts for half of the global fin trade and last year approximately 10,000 metric tons were imported into the city. When Hong Kong’s largest airline, Cathay Pacific, discovered that 13% of the commodity was transported in by cargo, the company released a ban on shark meat in their planes. The involvement of large corporations leading the way in conservation can redirect the world’s many industries in a more animal-friendly direction.
