Chimps Put Human Memory To Shame

(ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE) Evidence is starting to prove that we have seriously underestimated our animal friends’ intelligence as we often test them in ways that work for humans but not with other species. Scientists are finally seeing eye to eye with animals’ intellectual aptitude in both scope and scale while taking into consideration an animal’s anatomy and special abilities. As researchers begin to think about tests from the animal’s perspective, they are finding out that chimps have a better memory than humans among other surprising discoveries. Great Ape Populations Dwindle As Illegal Trade Thrives

(ANIMAL TRADE) According to a UN report released this week, nearly 3,000 great apes are killed or captured in the wild each year because of the thriving illegal trade—usually to be sold as exotic pets, bought by disreputable zoos, or exploited by tourism. The study also revealed that approximately more than 22,000 great apes were lost to the illegal animal trade between 2005 and 2011. This comes as startling news considering that the international trade in chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans is currently banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Super Bowl Ads Scored Big For Chimpanzees

(CULTURE) This year’s Superbowl was full of surprises. With a power outage, a Destiny’s Child reunion, and a questionable last-minute call, viewers were definitely kept on the edge of their seat. But no surprise to PETA was the humane direction taken by this year’s spread of commercials. This was the first Super Bowl since all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. agreed never to use great apes in their ads. As expected, not one of this year’s ads (most importantly CareerBuilder) featured chimpanzees or other great apes, and many ads used CGI to portray other animals. Read on to learn about how advertisers are finally utilizing kindness rather than relying on live animals for cheap laughs.” — Global Animal

NIH Retiring 86% Of Research Chimps

(ANIMAL RESEARCH) In a move that would nearly put an end to government research on chimpanzees as soon as this March, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is proposing to retire all but 50 of the remaining 360 chimpanzees currently being used for federally funded research. The panel has recommended phasing out all current biomedical research grants involving research chimps, banning chimpanzee breeding, and retiring the chimps to sanctuaries such as Chimp Haven—the only sanctuary that receives government funding to care for government owned chimps. Midlife Crisis Goes Ape

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) If your 40-something-year-old dad recently bought a Lamborghini and started pumping iron, don’t worry—he is not the only one suffering from a midlife crisis. In fact a new study shows that the animal kingdom is also affected by the condition. A team of international researchers studying great apes assembled data from 60 different zoos around the world on more than 500 orangutans and chimpanzees, and the results indicate that apes, just like humans, seem to suffer from a lack of satisfaction when they hit their middle years. Research Chimps Retired, Not Exactly Free

(ANIMAL TESTING) LOUISIANA — The National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed last month that they will be retiring 110 chimpanzees from a Louisianan research center in an attempt to help end animal testing. While ten of the chimps will be moved to a nearby sanctuary, the other 100 will be moved to another research institute in Texas. There, they will be ineligible for testing or research, but will be permitted to take part in any behavioral studies. The lucky ten chimpanzees en route to the sanctuary Chimp Haven will no longer have to suffer through animal testing. Read on for more on this bittersweet news. — Global Animal
