(ANIMAL SCIENCE) A new study has revealed that chimpanzees truly have team spirit. The research tested the extent of cooperation between the primates during tasks that are most efficiently completed through teamwork. The chimps successfully worked together in 86 percent of the trials which proves they intentionally coordinate actions and understand the importance in doing so. Read on to learn how this research was conducted and what this means for their close primate relatives—humans. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL TRADE) According to a UN report released this week, nearly 3,000 great apes are killed or captured in the wild each year because of the thriving illegal trade—usually to be sold as exotic pets, bought by disreputable zoos, or exploited by tourism. The study also revealed that approximately more than 22,000 great apes were lost to the illegal animal trade between 2005 and 2011. This comes as startling news considering that the international trade in chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans is currently banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Read on to learn more about the illegal animal trade’s devastating effects on great ape populations. — Global Animal

(CULTURE) This year’s Superbowl was full of surprises. With a power outage, a Destiny’s Child reunion, and a questionable last-minute call, viewers were definitely kept on the edge of their seat. But no surprise to PETA was the humane direction taken by this year’s spread of commercials. This was the first Super Bowl since all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. agreed never to use great apes in their ads. As expected, not one of this year’s ads (most importantly CareerBuilder) featured chimpanzees or other great apes, and many ads used CGI to portray other animals. Read on to learn about how advertisers are finally utilizing kindness rather than relying on live animals for cheap laughs.” — Global Animal

(ANIMAL RESEARCH) In a move that would nearly put an end to government research on chimpanzees as soon as this March, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is proposing to retire all but 50 of the remaining 360 chimpanzees currently being used for federally funded research. The panel has recommended phasing out all current biomedical research grants involving research chimps, banning chimpanzee breeding, and retiring the chimps to sanctuaries such as Chimp Haven—the only sanctuary that receives government funding to care for government owned chimps. Read on to learn more about this victory and, while the NIH is currently accepting public comments on the matter, be sure to make your voice heard. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL TESTING) Great news! Over 100 chimpanzees owned by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are being released from the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana and properly retired to a sanctuary. Following pleas from PETA and animal activists alike, the NIH redirected its initial decision to send the majority of the chimps to a notorious Texas research lab. Read on to learn more about this landmark victory and support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act to help the hundreds of chimpanzees who still require protection and freedom from invasive experiments. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL RESEARCH) Did you know the U.S. is the only country in the world that currently conducts invasive medical experimentation on great apes? Even though chimpanzees and humans share 98.7 percent of their DNA, supporters of chimpanzee research argue that chimpanzees are not humans and therefore do not deserve the same rights. However, chimpanzees are highly intellectual and emotive creatures, capable of suffering from PTSD and depression. Read on to learn more on why medical research on chimpanzees must be banned and take action: support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) If your 40-something-year-old dad recently bought a Lamborghini and started pumping iron, don’t worry—he is not the only one suffering from a midlife crisis. In fact a new study shows that the animal kingdom is also affected by the condition. A team of international researchers studying great apes assembled data from 60 different zoos around the world on more than 500 orangutans and chimpanzees, and the results indicate that apes, just like humans, seem to suffer from a lack of satisfaction when they hit their middle years. Read on to learn more about this fascinating new discovery. — Global Animal
