Great Ape Populations Dwindle As Illegal Trade Thrives

(ANIMAL TRADE) According to a UN report released this week, nearly 3,000 great apes are killed or captured in the wild each year because of the thriving illegal trade—usually to be sold as exotic pets, bought by disreputable zoos, or exploited by tourism. The study also revealed that approximately more than 22,000 great apes were lost to the illegal animal trade between 2005 and 2011. This comes as startling news considering that the international trade in chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans is currently banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). NIH Retiring 86% Of Research Chimps

(ANIMAL RESEARCH) In a move that would nearly put an end to government research on chimpanzees as soon as this March, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is proposing to retire all but 50 of the remaining 360 chimpanzees currently being used for federally funded research. The panel has recommended phasing out all current biomedical research grants involving research chimps, banning chimpanzee breeding, and retiring the chimps to sanctuaries such as Chimp Haven—the only sanctuary that receives government funding to care for government owned chimps. Midlife Crisis Goes Ape

In fact a new study shows that the animal kingdom is also affected by the condition. A team of international researchers studying great apes assembled data from 60 different zoos around the world on more than 500 orangutans and chimpanzees, and the results indicate that apes, just like humans, seem to suffer from a lack of satisfaction when they hit their middle years. Research Chimps Retired, Not Exactly Free

(ANIMAL TESTING) LOUISIANA — The National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed last month that they will be retiring 110 chimpanzees from a Louisianan research center in an attempt to help end animal testing. While ten of the chimps will be moved to a nearby sanctuary, the other 100 will be moved to another research institute in Texas. There, they will be ineligible for testing or research, but will be permitted to take part in any behavioral studies. The lucky ten chimpanzees en route to the sanctuary Chimp Haven will no longer have to suffer through animal testing. Read on for more on this bittersweet news. — Global Animal

Chimp’s Plea For Freedom

(ZOO ANIMALS) A chimpanzee at the Welsh Mountain Zoo made a heartbreaking plea for freedom when he used what appears to be sign language to ask people to open his cage.
