Museum “Un-Coops” Chicken

(FARM ANIMALS) LOS ANGELES – The National Museum of Animals & Society (NMAS) has just launched an online exhibit entitled “Un-Cooped: Deconstructing the Domesticated Chicken.” The one-of-a-kind display, which features a variety of media from 16 artists, challenges the way people perceive the often overlooked chicken. “Un-Cooped” sheds light on how poorly chickens are treated and introduces them as unique individuals. Would You Pick A “Furnished” Jail Cell Over Freedom? (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Due to strong public outrage, hen cages were expected to be a thing of the past by now as most people realize how awful and debilitating the condition of a cramped metal cage can be for these poor chickens who are forced to spend their entire lives in captivity. But instead of listening to their consumers, the chicken/egg industries are pushing legislation that would allow “furnished” cages. PETA writes, “the United Egg Producers industry is pushing federal legislation that would trade one cruel metal cage for another, and their bill could never be challenged or changed by state law or public vote…Misleadingly named ‘furnished’ cages can house as many as 60 birds.” Many animal welfare groups are settling for this compromise arguing that a bigger cage is better than a small cage. Unfortunately, even though the dimensions of the metal cell may change, the cramped, claustrophobic conditions of being housed with too many other chickens remains the same. Jason Collins Scores For Gay Animals

(CULTURE) Praised NBA center Jason Collins has come out as gay in an article featured in Monday’s edition of Sports Illustrated. He is the first openly gay male professional athlete who is currently playing in a major sport. During a conversation with the acclaimed basketball player, President Barack Obama praised Collins for his bravery and gave the pro-athlete his full support. Not only is the President of the United States on Collin’s side, but the animal kingdom also has the NBA center’s back. Evidence of homosexual behavior is found throughout the animal world in many different species, including sheep and penguins. Washington Humane Society Flocks To The Rescue

(FARM) Last week, the Washington Humane Society came to the rescue of 106 fuzzy chicks who, thanks to a shipping error, were recently waylaid at a post office in Northeast D.C. The ownership of the baby Rhode Island Reds—who were initially destined for Blountsville, Alabama—was eventually transferred to the D.C. Post Office over concern that the chicks would not survive another trip. The chicks were then wisely relayed to the Washington Humane Center who provided them with heating lamps, blankets, food, and water until moving to their new home alongside our friends at Farm Sanctuary in New York. Chicken Farms Turn To Oregano

(FARM) As consumers continue to demand purer foods, chickens raised for Bell & Evans over the last three years have been fed a special diet consisting of oregano oil and a pinch of cinnamon as a way to prevent the spread of bacterial diseases without relying on antibiotics. However, despite encouraging preliminary test results conducted by other experimental farmers, many are skeptical and feel there are too many unanswered questions and not enough proof that these alternatives are equally as effective as antibiotics in fighting bacteria. Police Shut Down Cambodia’s First PETA Protest

(PETA) CAMBODIA — Police broke up PETA’s first protest in Cambodia on Monday, saying the activists who were sitting outside KFC had disturbed public order with their strange behavior. A local onlooker claimed Cambodians don’t have much knowledge on animal rights and are mostly concerned with the chemicals that may be in their food.
