Animal Activists Initiate Lead Bullet Ban

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Hunting with lead ammunition might soon be a thing of the past in the state of California. Three animal organizations are gearing up to push a bill that would put a statewide ban on using lead ammunition during hunting. Although a partial ban is already in place it looks like a change is necessary since lead ammunition is still causing the endangered California condor, bald eagle, and other birds to die from lead poisoning after consuming animals shot by hunters. Animal advocates are proposing that a switch be made to copper bullets, which are more environmentally-friendly. Unfortunately, the NRA is resistant to this plan. Read on to find out why it’s essential to make this change in order to save these majestic birds. — Global Animal

Central California Has Seismic Concerns

(OCEANS/TAKE ACTION) CALIFORNIA — Animal advocates are deeply concerned for California’s central coast marine life in response to PG&E’s decision to start seismic mapping this November. The Seismic Imaging Project entails blasting 18 underwater cannons every 15-20 seconds, 24 hours a day for 33 days. The blasts send shock-waves into the earths crust which will supply data to create 3-D images of multiple earthquake faults near Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The project will test whether further precautions are necessary to prevent a nuclear meltdown in the event of an earthquake, not unlike the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan. — Global Animal

Restaurant Fools With Foie Gras Law

(ANIMAL ABUSE) The recent California ban on foie gras is underway, but that hasn’t stopped some Californians from attempting to serve this product of cruelty. A San Francisco restaurant is claiming that legally they can still serve foie gras, as their business is on federal property and thus must only adhere to federal laws. Protestors have once again gathered to inform the consumers of the cruelty the birds suffer through to produce engorged livers. The question is whether these people should be allowed to exploit a loophole to get around a humane law. Read on and tell us what you think. — Global Animal

California Says “Au Revior” To Foie Gras

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) CALIFORNIA — A battle between California chefs and animal rights activists is underway and the reason is fatty goose or duck liver, commonly known as foie gras. The ban to sell or produce foie gras in California will go into effect July 1, 2012. Although the ban was passed in 2004, officials allotted a seven-year grace period for the restaurant to develop a more humane way of producing the livers. But nothing has changed, except perhaps the increase in restaurants serving foie gras. — Global Animal

Mice Threaten SF Island Ecosystem

(WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) CALIFORNIA — Off the coast of San Francisco on the Farallon Islands lives the Ashy Storm Petrel, a scare seabird found only along the California Current. But the sudden infestation of the house mouse now threatens the entire island’s ecosystem. The mice eat and reproduce all day. The owls feast on the mice well into the winter then turning to the petrel after the mice population recedes. The problem is the petrel don’t provide enough food for the owls who then starve to death. Geese Live Freely In CA

(FOIE GRAS BANNED) CALIFORNIA — Chefs may call it a delicacy, foodies may call it exquisite, but animal activists are up-in-arms over it. Foie Gras has been on the radar for many as the most controversial gourmet food, as its creation stems from force-feeding ducks and geese by shoving a metal pipe down their throat. This way, the food goes directly to their stomach and in just a matter of weeks they are abnormally overweight and their livers expanded to ten times its normal size. It is no wonder California has joined the fight against this cruel delicacy by banning it. Read on for more about the ban and how people are responding to it.  — Global Animal
