A World First: Bear Undergoes Brain Surgery

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) Champa, a three-year-old Asiatic black bear, recently became the first of her kind to undergo brain surgery. The black bear, or moon bear, was becoming erratic, not socializing with other bears, and slowly going blind. In most countries she would have been put to sleep, but in Laos—where strong Buddhist traditions of animal and human equality are put in place—this was not an option. So instead, Champa underwent six hours of keyhole surgery. The lucky moon bear is now successfully recovering at the Free the Bears sanctuary and has even begun to socialize. Chief Saunooke Bear Park Shut Down

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Chief Saunooke Bear Park in Cherokee, North Carolina is finally being shut down following animal abuse allegations from prominent animal rights and conservation groups such as PETA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an order this month to suspend the bear pit’s exhibitor license and fine the facility $20,000 after PETA revealed that it had uncovered evidence that the park failed to provide the bears with appropriate food, veterinary care, and safe housing. Delcianna Winders, a director at PETA, expressed her hopes that the bear park will remain closed for good and that the bears will be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. But unfortunately, despite the shutdown, the bears will likely remain with their owners for the time being. Read on to learn more about the abuse allegations and sign the petition to ban exotic animal ownership in North Carolina. — Global Animal

“Moon Bear”: Bear Bile Industry Exposed

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) CHINA — When Chinese pharmacists claimed that forcing a hole into a bear’s abdomen was as easy as taking water from a tap, an irate animal activist responded: “Why don’t you go and extract bile yourself. Then you can tell us how good you feel.” A species of black bear, also called the Moon Bear for the white, crescent shaped patch on its chest, is quarantined for the so called medicinal effects of its stomach bile. These bears are contained in small cages and left with a permanent hole in their abdomen for the bile to drip out.
