(POLITICS) In a move that shocked many, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has decided to pay Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus a huge $9.3 million settlement to end charges of litigation abuse. The lawsuit revolves around the circus’ unethical treatment of Asian elephants and was originally filed in July 2000 by Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) on behalf of the ASPCA, AWI, FFA, Tom Rider, and others. After it was dismissed by a judge for lacking evidence, the producer of the circus filed a RICO action against the animal welfare groups involved. The case is still pending. (DOG BREEDS) The American Kennel Club (AKC) has always portrayed themselves as an elite organization of people and purebred dogs based off the integrity of their registry, but the truth is a little different. Facts show that many AKC-registered dogs are born in puppy mills. A huge chunk of the money that finances the American Kennel Club, and an unbelievable number of dogs come from commercial puppy mill breeders. — Global Animal
(ANIMAL NEWS) The ASPCA and New York Police Department evacuated 47 pit bulls from a basement apartment in the Bronx on Thursday. The dogs, bred for fighting, lived in crammed cages and are thought to have never been outside. (PUPPY MILLS) The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is leading a “No Pet Store Puppies Campaign.” The goal is to raise awareness about puppy mill cruelty and the link between puppy mills and pet stores. Most stores that sell puppies won’t say they are buying their dogs from a puppy mill, if asked, the’ll tell you they get their puppies from licensed USDA breeders. But what does that mean?
