Animal Lovers Griffith & Banderas Adopt

(CELEBRITY PETS) After the passing of their two dogs roughly three weeks ago, Academy Award winner Melanie Griffith and her husband, actor Antonio Banderas, sought to honor the late pups by opening their home to two rescue dogs from one of their favorite Los Angeles-based shelters. The couple adopted two Shepherd/Labrador-mixed siblings—a brother and a sister—from the Ace of Hearts shelter in Beverly Hills, which is dedicated to rescuing dogs the day they are to be euthanized from various Los Angeles shelters. Griffith and Banderas appear to have a history with the organizationand are strong supporters of adopting rescue pets. Katherine Heigl Launches Line For Pets In Need

(CELEBRITY) Emmy Award-winning actress Katherine Heigl recently announced her newest venture called Just One, which features a line of specially designed pet products. A portion of each sale will support animal welfare efforts and programs. ”Animal cruelty and unnecessary euthanasia are a major problem in our country,” said Heigl on her website. “Just One believes that if each one of us does one thing to help this problem we will together solve it.” Each time someone purchases a Just One product, a percentage of that purchase will go towards spaying and neutering pets, helping sheltered animals find loving homes, and putting an end to the euthanization of nearly 10,000 companion animals a day. Tonik, The Dog With A Human Face

(LIFE WITH PETS) Many have seen a photo of this one-of-a-kind canine circulating the Internet this past week, and wondered: “Is he part human?” But contrary to speculation, the image features a two-year-old, poodle-Shih Tzu mix named Tonik, whose soulful expression has taken the World Wide Web by storm. The person-faced pup was recently saved from a kill shelter in Kentucky and brought to the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group, an animal welfare agency in Mishawaka, Indiana, where he is now ready for immediate adoption. New Bill Forces Animal Abusers to Pay

(ANIMAL LAWS) Oftentimes it seems like animal abusers don’t suffer any consequences for their actions. But the state of Pennsylvania is making sure that those who mistreat animals pay an actual price. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill titled HB 82 which declares that the cost of seized animals will be provided for by those they were taken away from. This should be a great relief to animal rescues and shelters who, up until now, had to pay great sums of money from their own funds to care for seized animals. Hopefully other states will follow. ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge Saves Lives

(ANIMAL ACTIVISTS) A few months back, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) partnered with Rachael Ray to help save animals with their ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The annual, three-month-long contest encourages animal shelters across the country to compete and come up with new ways to save animals and win grants simultaneously. This year’s challenge proved to be enormously successful. In total, this year’s 50 contestants saved 56,232 animals—more than any other year of the Challenge!
