Give The World’s Loneliest Elephant A Better Home

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Since being torn from her family at age three, Mali the elephant has spent 35 lonely years living in a concrete pen as the only captive elephant in the Philippines. In 1974, the nursing baby was taken from her herd in Sri Lanka and was sent to Manila as a gift to then-President Ferdinand Marcos. She has since lived three decades of her life at the Manila Zoo surrounded by iron bars, with only a small pool for entertainment and relief from the blistering heat. Condemned to a life of misery in isolation from other elephants, Mali suffers from severe depression and damage to her feet—a leading cause of death for captive elephants. Read on to learn more about “the world’s loneliest elephant” and sign the petition to put pressure on transferring Mali to a sanctuary. — Global Animal

Washington Humane Society Flocks To The Rescue

(FARM) Last week, the Washington Humane Society came to the rescue of 106 fuzzy chicks who, thanks to a shipping error, were recently waylaid at a post office in Northeast D.C. The ownership of the baby Rhode Island Reds—who were initially destined for Blountsville, Alabama—was eventually transferred to the D.C. Post Office over concern that the chicks would not survive another trip. The chicks were then wisely relayed to the Washington Humane Center who provided them with heating lamps, blankets, food, and water until moving to their new home alongside our friends at Farm Sanctuary in New York. Research Chimps Retired, Not Exactly Free

(ANIMAL TESTING) LOUISIANA — The National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed last month that they will be retiring 110 chimpanzees from a Louisianan research center in an attempt to help end animal testing. While ten of the chimps will be moved to a nearby sanctuary, the other 100 will be moved to another research institute in Texas. There, they will be ineligible for testing or research, but will be permitted to take part in any behavioral studies. The lucky ten chimpanzees en route to the sanctuary Chimp Haven will no longer have to suffer through animal testing. Read on for more on this bittersweet news. — Global Animal

Global Animal Visits Animal Acres (GALLERY)

(ANIMAL HUMAN FRIENDSHIP/GALLERY) Global Animal recently visited Animal Acres Farm Sanctuary in Acton, CA where we were able to meet and greet the numerous farm animals and learn about their plight. Having locations in New York, Northern California, and Los Angeles, Farm Sanctuary is currently the nation’s largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization. The Southern California shelter in itself is 26 acres and houses more than 100 farm animals. The sanctuary works to protect animals from the abuses of factory farming and encourages a new awareness in the way society views and treats farm animals. Check out the memorable photos from our life-changing visit! — Global Animal
