Ohio Says No To Backyard Bears And Other Exotic Pets

(ANIMAL POLITICS) Ohio’s exotic animal law went into effect on September 5, ruling against the acquisition of exotic animals and creating new standards for currently owned exotics. The decision is in response to last year’s horrific accident when Zanesville resident Terry Thompson released his menagerie of wild animals into the surrounding area, causing unprepared law enforcement to kill 50 of the animals in the name of public safety. The selfish attainment of exotic animals is dangerous to both humans and animals, leading to accidents that are easily avoidable. With Ohio’s important decision, only six states have yet to outlaw the taming and private ownership of exotic animals, and until they reevaluate their stance, wild animals will continue to be harmed for reasons outside their control.
