A Horse Against All Odds

(HORSE RACING) Neville the horse is one of the top contenders for international Horse of the Year and a top contender for the Summer Olympics in London later this year. But like many other race horses, his life has not been an easy one. Racehorses are the victims of a multibillion-dollar industry where drug abuse, injuries, and race fixing is common, and where many horses’ careers end at the slaughterhouse. But Neville has endured more than the just the horrors of the race track. Read more on the strong-willed horse that was able to cheat death twice and who is now on his way to becoming a legend, thanks, in part, to his guardians who did not give up on him. — Global Animal

Ireland Bans Puppy Mills

(ANIMAL NEWS) IRELAND — The reference to Ireland as the Puppy Mill of Europe is one that legislators there hope to wipe out. Two 2012 laws require dog breeders to uphold certain standards and give local law enforcement the authority to shut breeders down if they don’t. Irish breeders can still have large numbers of dogs, but they can no longer raise them in dangerous, cramped conditions. By instating these regulations, legislators and authorities hope to find and shut down all the puppy mills in Ireland. We hope that other countries will follow suit. Dubai Shark Wins “Most Virgin Births”

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) DUBAI — Zebedee, a zebra shark at the Burj al Arab hotel in Dubai, has taken her biological clock into her own fins. For the fourth year in a row, she has fertilized her own eggs without ever seeing a male shark. Scientists have noticed this sort of “virgin birth” in other sharks, but Zebedee has officially done it for a record-breaking four years. While many women might envy Zebedee and her self reliance, scientists suggest she probably wouldn’t produce eggs like this in the wild. Read more about Zebedee and her babies. — Global Animal

Whooping Cranes Grounded By FAA

(BIRD CONSERVATION) Just before Christmas, Operation Migration and its flock of whooping cranes were grounded on an attempt to migrate south for the winter. The organization attempts to reestablish migrating flocks of whooping cranes, becoming surrogate parents to the cranes after they have been hatched, and leading them on a yearly migration from Wisconsin to Florida. Read on for why this year’s migration has not reached its destination, and why government rules and regulations are throwing a wrench in the wheel of wildlife conservation efforts. — Global Animal

No-Kill Shelters More Progressive Than Productive

(SHELTER ANIMALS) Are no-kill shelters really the solution to the abandoned pet population pandemic? Some believe not. And while we at Global Animal don’t believe in controlling the pet population through euthanization, the fact that no-kill shelters choose to only accept animals that are potential prospects for adoption isn’t really fixing the problem. Rather than ‘not euthanizing’ homeless animals, no-kill shelters opt to leave them to the streets where they’re susceptible to being hit by cars, attacked by other animals, or starvation. It seems the only solution with results to back it up is spaying and neutering. In the past four decades, due to spaying and neutering, the country’s animal euthanization numbers have dropped from 20 million a year to less than four million in 2011. So I ask you again, global animals: are No-Kill Shelters really the solution? Or just another tactic for irresponsible pet owners to feel progressive and better about themselves? — Global Animal
