(CULTURE) It comes as no surprise that animals dominated Super Bowl commercials yet again this year. With a Budweiser commercial that made everyone’s hearts melt to perhaps a hilarious Doritos commercial starring a snack-loving goat, the Baltimore Ravens weren’t the only animals winning this past weekend. Being the first Super Bowl to take place since all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. agreed not to use great apes in their ads, not one of this year’s commercials featured chimpanzees or other great apes. In addition, many commercials used computer-generated imagery CGI to portray other exotic animals. Here are just a few of this year’s favorites. — Global Animal
(SERVICE DOGS) Tchaikovsky’s infamous Nutcracker Ballet appears every holiday season, showcasing beautiful dancers all while warming the crowd’s hearts. The Chicago-based PAWSitive Therapy Troupe, however, gives its own spin to this classic show. Premiered in 2000, a canine-centered version of the ballet is performed by the organization’s therapy dogs, and it has been a hit with audiences ever since! The former police officers of Vaughn were revoked their privilege of carrying a gun, and by default, this German Shepherd, Nikka, has become the primary member of the police department. (ANIMAL FRIENDSHIP) MICHIGAN — A picture is worth a thousand words. In the case of John Unger and his dog Schoep, a picture is worth thousands of dollars. After a friend snapped a photograph of Unger rocking his 19 year old, arthritic dog to sleep in the waters of Lake Superior, the picture went viral and compassionate persons from around the world have contributed donations for Schoep’s therapy.
