Iditarod Chased By Animal Cruelty Accusations

(ANIMAL NEWS) The infamous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins this weekend. The Iditarod is a two-week, 1,100-mile long race across Alaska, one of the toughest sled dog races anywhere. At least one dog has died in most of the previous races, this includes 20 since 2005. There have also been numerous reports of dog abuse, and since most of the dogs in the race are bred precisely for racing, the ones that don’t make great runners are oftentimes simply killed off. Proponents of the race argue that the hyper breeds that partake in it enjoy running, and that their wolf ancestors are known for endlessly roaming the woods. But it’s more than a stretch to compare a grueling 125 miles a day with a sled attached to your back, to just roaming around in the woods for fun. Read on to find out more about this brutal race. — Global Animal

Iowa Bans Exposing Farm Animal Cruelty

(ANIMAL WELFARE) IOWA  — The Iowa Legislature has passed the first bill in the US making it a crime to take undercover video of animal abuse in farming operations. People who profit off the killing of innocent animals know their entire industry relies on the public being unaware of the atrocities involved with animal slaughter. Undercover videos released earlier this year, brought to light the animal abuse and torture happening at the Butterball turkey raising facility and Sparboe Farms. Understandably, animal welfare groups are outraged, arguing the measure is going to prevent animal abuse from being publicized. Read on for more information on this absurd bill. — Global Animal

Stop Horse Diving In Atlantic City (TAKE ACTION)

(TAKE ACTION) Executives of Atlantic City’s Steel Pier have decided to bring back the horse diving act, a show where horses are forced to run and jump off a 40 foot pier into a 12 foot pool. The show was a major attraction from 1920 to 1970 until it was shut down, and rightfully so. Steel Pier president Anthony Catanoso says there is no evidence that the show is cruel or abusive. We would like to see him take a flying leap from 40 feet up, land belly first in 12 feet of water, and revise that statement! Read more on how to put a stop to horse diving in Atlantic City.  — Global Animal

Police Funded By Charity To End Wildlife Smuggling

(ANIMAL SMUGGLING) LONDON — Unexpected money fell into the hands of Metropolitan Police in London from a charity known as the World Society for the Protection of Animals. WSPA has decided to donate a large sum of money to the squad within the Metropolitan Police that is responsible for catching the hardened criminals who profit from the illegal smuggling of wild animals. The money will be used to beef up the number of investigators and  provide more funding for the group. Since criminals involved in this mistreatment of wildlife make a giant profit, the importance of shutting down current and future operations is valuable for both animal activists and detectives involved in putting an end to crime. Exotic Pets Are Not For Sale

(EXOTIC ANIMAL SALES) Animals are living creatures not memorabilia objects to be auctioned to the public. Yet, those selling exotic animals sell them in such fashion. However, animals are most beautiful when living in their natural habitats — not in the backs of trailers. In essence, exotic animals are only “exotic” because they are not meant to live in someone’s home or in artificial environments. Not only is “owning” such animals unnatural, but they present a danger to their surroundings when living in captivity. Remember the fiasco in Ohio when one man released his exotic animals before shooting himself? — Global Animal
