San Francisco Provides Qualified Homeless With Controversial Treat

(ANIMAL NEWS) CALIFORNIA — Notorious for streets overflowing with beggars, San Francisco is desperately trying to do something about this top concern. Wonderful Opportunities for Occupants and Fidos (WOOF) is executing a plan that will provide every eligible homeless person with a temporary foster puppy until a more permanent home is established. This proposal could take the homeless away from panhandling, provide individuals with money and give them the responsibility and benefit of a canine companion. On the other hand, animal rights activists say the pairing will put the dogs at risk, and PETA is offering a large sum to bring the whole plan to a halt. Should the program be allowed to transpire? Read on and tell us what you think. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL ABUSE) The recent California ban on foie gras is underway, but that hasn’t stopped some Californians from attempting to serve this product of cruelty. A San Francisco restaurant is claiming that legally they can still serve foie gras, as their business is on federal property and thus must only adhere to federal laws. Protestors have once again gathered to inform the consumers of the cruelty the birds suffer through to produce engorged livers. The question is whether these people should be allowed to exploit a loophole to get around a humane law. Read on and tell us what you think. — Global Animal

Photos Capture Animal Abuse In New Light

(PHOTO GALLERY) There are countless studies that prove animals are intelligent, express emotion and feel pain. There is also a direct correlation between animal abuse, domestic violence and other crimes. Yet animal abusers still go largely unpunished. Photographer Nicolas Wickstrom attempts to take us into the dark world of animal cruelty by substituting people in situations that involve the mistreatment of animals. Wickstrom explains his focus, “I aimed at inspiring more people to see the horrendous nature of what was going on and feel urged to do something, anything, to fix it.” Check out his photos. — Global Animal
