Jason Collins Scores For Gay Animals

(CULTURE) Praised NBA center Jason Collins has come out as gay in an article featured in Monday’s edition of Sports Illustrated. He is the first openly gay male professional athlete who is currently playing in a major sport. During a conversation with the acclaimed basketball player, President Barack Obama praised Collins for his bravery and gave the pro-athlete his full support. Not only is the President of the United States on Collin’s side, but the animal kingdom also has the NBA center’s back. Evidence of homosexual behavior is found throughout the animal world in many different species, including sheep and penguins. Take a closer look at some same-sex partnerships in nature that prove love is blind among all animals, including humans. — Global Animal

Keep Lion Meat Off The Menu

(ANIMAL LAWS) Lion meat is not usually seen on most American menus, yet one Illinois state representative claims the dish is prevalent enough to prompt legislation. Representative Luis Arroyo is proposing a Lion Meat Act which would make it “unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from this State, buy, or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter.” Consuming lion meat is not customary around the world, but apparently there is a small U.S. market for the threatened species. Read more about the issues and dangers associated with this exotic meat, and make sure to sign the petition telling the USDA to ban the sale of lion meat once and for all! — Global Animal

Lawmakers Roar To Save King Of The Jungle

(POLITICS) Last month, politicians took action toward finalizing the much needed preservation of big cats in Africa. A bipartisan group of 44 members of Congress sent a letter to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service urging them to preserve the African lion under the Endangered Species Act. It’s about time Washington finally decided to step in and help, because in the past 30 years alone, the population of Africa’s lions has been essentially cut in half due to an importation of lion “trophies,” such as lion skins and their parts, with the United States as a the clear leader in importation. Lion Populations On The Decline

(WILDLIFE) A new study conducted by Biodiversity and Conservation has confirmed that lions are rapidly losing ground across Africa’s once-thriving savannahs. No surprise here, this drop in area is solely due to burgeoning human population growth and subsequent, massive land-use conversion. Representing the most comprehensive assessment of the state and vitality of African savannah habitat to date, the report maintains that the lion has lost 75 percent of its original natural habitat in Africa, a reduction that has devastated lion populations across the continent. Read on to learn more about the reasons for this sharp decrease in habitat. — Global Animal

New Text Message From: Lions?

(LION RESEARCH) KENYA — Who’s in your cellular network? African lions, apparently. Kenyan conservationists have improved the collaring system for lions by upgrading them to new GPS collars that send an automated text message via wireless networks to researchers who can then pinpoint the animals’ exact location. Although the new system is costly, it is far more detailed and efficient in helping to protect lion populations whose numbers have suffered drastically in recent years. Read more on the innovative research system and how it is helping a species in need. — Global Animal
