ICELAND, Nov. 26, 2010 – In a rare, but much appreciated, act of political courage, the United States criticized Iceland’s whaling activities, condemning them as “unsustainable.” This is a breath of fresh air to anti-whaling activists around the world who’ve become used to whaling countries getting a pass by the world’s governments for their murderous activities. Could a criticism of Japan be next – a much more powerful country that kills many more whales than Iceland, all under the lie of research? Risking the anger of a rich ally takes an ethical backbone. Let’s hope Uncle Sam stands up straight on this one! – Global Animal

Tissue samples from whales make it possible to research disease in the giants of the sea, and eventually, find solutions and save lives. Until now, tissue sampling was injurious and invasive. Flying snot, trapped with a toy helicopter, has changed all of that. Sounds more fun, no?

Nov. 19, 2010 – NEW ZEALAND – Is this good news or bad news? Will this protect the whalers from “unsafe” intervention tactics by anti-whaling groups, allowing the whalers to continue their killing without interference? Or could this be the first step the New Zealand government takes to monitor the Japanese whaling fleet and support the will of its citizens, who have little tolerance left for the annual slaughter in the Southern Sea?

Many creatures seem to have magical abilities, and the mimic octopus is no exception. In the blink of an eye this creature can go from looking like an average octopus to looking like a flat fish, or a sea snake. Watch the video to see the fascinating transformations!

UNITED KINGDOM – A group of thirty-three pilot whales died on the coast of Scotland, possibly due to naval sonar activity. This is yet another clash between human activity and animals where the animals, as majestic and powerful as they are, are no match for human technology run amok.

MEXICO – While we have sunscreen and clothing to protect us from the sun, whales basking in the sunlight have nothing to shield them from harsh UV rays. As the earth’s ozone layer depletes, UV rays are only getting more powerful. Scientists worked on deodorant for birds, now do they have to move on to sunscreen for cetaceans?

Nov. 13, 2010 URUGUAY- Nipper the baby dolphin rescued 12 days ago, died at dawn this morning of complications from hypothermia and respiratory failure, according to Richard Tesore, who had been caring for the infant river dolphin at the SOS Rescate Fauna Marina in Uruguay.
