Which Came First? The Chicken Or The… Duck?

(FARM ANIMALS) UNITED KINGDOM — Sometimes our children don’t look exactly like us, but it’s not often they are a completely different species. Farm owners, as well as Hilda the hen, were shocked when Hilda’s eggs hatched not into chicks, but into five sweet little ducklings. Hilda took it in stride, though, and so far they are one big happy family. Read more about Hilda the adoptive hen. — Global Animal

Chicken With Side Of Arsenic

(FACTORY FARMS) Arsenic in chickens? Really? Johns Hopkins University and Arizona State University tested chicken feathers to reveal levels of arsenic, Benadryl and illegal antibiotics. Chickens are fed arsenic to make their flesh a more appetizing shade of pink and to fight infection. The illegal antibiotics found create antibiotic-resistant viruses that kill more Americans per year than AIDS, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Fight For More Humane Farms Rages On

(FARM ANIMALS) The positive sides to a meat-less diet are never-ending. Better health, better environment, and a clear conscience are just a few. But even though everyday we learn more and more about animal friendly diets, factory farming and its abuses show no sign of relinquishing its cruel practices. In his book Every Twelve Seconds: Industrialized Slaughter and the Politics of Sight, Timothy Pachirat describes what he witnessed at a Omaha slaughterhouse, where cattle are killed every twelve seconds. In such factories it’s hard to look at animals as feeling beings when they’re treated like disposable objects. Read on to learn more about why it’s important to invent new, humane ways for factory farms. — Global Animal

While England is still preparing to go ahead with the cull, the efforts made by animal rights groups and scientists, who contest whether the cull would do any good in protecting domestic cattle, seem to have made a difference in Wales.
