As of today, the total number of dead pigs floating along China’s financial hub has risen to over 6,600. Despite horrendous and graphic images which have understandably worried many residents, officials continue to believe the water supply remains safe. However, several of the pigs retrieved from the river were swollen, rotten, and even some with their internal organs visible. Legislators Cover Up The Truth About Factory Farming

(FARM ANIMALS) In an effort to silence the media and animal activists, legislators currently accepting political contributions from the livestock industry are also trying to pass new Ag-Gag laws. Ag-Gag laws, or rather censorship at its worst, make it an “act of terrorism” for undercover investigators or anyone else to expose the illegal and brutal reality of factory farming. Six states already enforce these oppressive laws, including North Dakota, Montana, and Kansas. Many animal friendly organizations have used undercover investigations to help improve farm animal conditions. Without such transparency, it’s painful to imagine the kind of negligence and abuse that will be ignored. Read on to find out how you can help. — Global Animal

California Biotech Facility Hoards 841 Goats

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Santa Cruz Biotechnology, a supplier of antibodies to molecular biology labs worldwide, has somehow managed to hide away 841 unreported goats at their “remote barn” for biological exploitation. A tip-off led inspectors to locate the barn which held the animals, some of whom were “lame, anaemic or had protruding bones.” While most research institutions are familiar with mice, goats are seen as good sources due to their ability to generate more antibodies and have a longer lifespan. Read more to learn about this irresponsible facility and why these goats have been unsafely hoarded for their antibodies. — Global Animal

Washington Humane Society Flocks To The Rescue

(FARM) Last week, the Washington Humane Society came to the rescue of 106 fuzzy chicks who, thanks to a shipping error, were recently waylaid at a post office in Northeast D.C. The ownership of the baby Rhode Island Reds—who were initially destined for Blountsville, Alabama—was eventually transferred to the D.C. Post Office over concern that the chicks would not survive another trip. The chicks were then wisely relayed to the Washington Humane Center who provided them with heating lamps, blankets, food, and water until moving to their new home alongside our friends at Farm Sanctuary in New York.
