It’s Time To Meet Your Meat

(HUMANE FARMING) WASHINGTON — Consumers, pay no attention to the carnage behind the meaty curtain. Recently, legislation has hit a number of states, which could potentially incriminate activists who take undercover pictures of slaughterhouse conditions. Although it’s hardly surprising that the agriculture industry is critical of these activists, the real issues rest with the safety of the public and the humane treatment of livestock. Public access to covert pictures could, at the very least, educate people on what exactly they are eating. Read the article below in order to find out more on the hardships facing the meat industry in relation to public knowledge. — Global Animal

Animals On Antibiotics: The Cure Or The Problem?

(ANIMAL SCIENCE) Mutant bacteria strands that have become resistant to antibiotics are a major concern for ranchers as well as for consumers. Currently, herd health practices are changing in hopes of minimizing potential risks. Within three years, certain antibiotics important to human medicine will be phased out of farm use for good. Yet, there is still no proven connection to antibiotic treatment failure in humans as a result of consuming animals who have been given antibiotics. Check out the article below for more on medications used on livestock and potentially dangerous mutant bacteria strands. — Global Animal

Oklahoma Approves Horse Slaughter

(HORSE SLAUGHTER) OKLAHOMA — For the first time since 2006, horse slaughter facilities will be coming back into business after a federal ban on the inhumane practice lapsed in 2011. On Friday, Governor Mary Fallin signed new legislation that would allow Oklahoma facilities to process and export horse meat. While numerous animal rights organizations are outraged by the plans to resume domestic horse slaughter, others—including horse rescuers and livestock associations—support the idea. 1,000 Dead Ducks Left Afloat In China River

(ANIMAL NEWS) As if 16,000 dead pigs in a river wasn’t bad enough, new reports from China indicate that another animal-river-dumping crisis is taking place. One-thousand dead ducks were found floating in the Nanhe river, which is fortunately not a source of drinking water. It’s unclear why the ducks are being dumped in the river, but the reasoning could be related to the reasons for the pig dumping—a disease outbreak. Hopefully China will find a more sanitary way of handling deceased animals. Read on to find out more about this unsettling news. — Global Animal

Stable Shut Down After Negligent Horse Deaths

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Cedar Lane Stables, a riding stable in Queens, has been shut down due to numerous horse fatalities. The stable lost the operator’s license after six horses died in the course of the past few months, two from undetermined causes. Cedar Lane used a “rough board” system—meaning customers paid the stable to house their horses, but were still required to care for the animal themselves. Unfortunately, some owners became negligent and abandoned care of their horses, while the stable simply ignored the fact that the animals were starving to death. In fact, Cedar Lane was so unaware of the conditions of their housed horses that a fowl died due to neglected medical attention. Read on to find out whether this irresponsible stable will be reopened. — Global Animal

End Horse Slaughter In The U.S.

(HORSES) For the first time since 2006, the U.S. is ready to begin the inhumane practice of slaughtering and exporting horses for human consumption. But the discovery of horse meat in beef products in several European countries over the past few months has led to a worldwide outcry by those against the killing of horses for meat, prompting lawmakers to take action. Last week, amid the widening horse meat scandal and the USDA’s announcement of a new horse slaughter facility in New Mexico, the nation’s leading animal welfare groups gathered with members of Congress on Capitol Hill to introduce the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, a new bill that would once again put an end to horse slaughter in the U.S. Read on to learn more about this potential umbrella ban and the ongoing dispute between ranchers, government officials, and animal rights activists. — Global Animal

Is Animal Advocacy Now A Crime?

(POLITICS) Animal advocates have exposed some of the biggest farm animal abuse cases to date. Now, state legislators are introducing laws that will make it more difficult for animal defenders to investigate cruelty and food safety cases. Bills of this nature are pending all across the U.S. with some going as far as making it a crime to take photographs at farming operations. Many believe the purpose of this type of legislation is to keep consumers in the dark about how their food is being produced. Read on about these new laws and the states that are trying to implement them. — Global Animal
