Rhino Horn: Expensive But Worthless

Rhino “cures” —  Something as expensive as gold, like the horn of a rhinoceros used for Traditional Chinese Medicine, might seem valuable, but it has no medicinal properties. The belief that rhino horns are a great cure, however, is largely responsible for illegal rhino poaching, which results in a reduction in the rhinoceros population by 90% in the last 40 years.

Read on to learn why the horn will not cure your ailments, and the superstition is an atrocity.

The Mean Ladies Of Make-Up

However, these cosmetic giants are now under fire for severely, and some say intentionally, misleading the public. As the Chinese government currently requires animal testing for cosmetics sold in China, PETA discovered that all three companies are, in fact, paying for animal testing. Iditarod Chased By Animal Cruelty Accusations

(ANIMAL NEWS) The infamous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins this weekend. The Iditarod is a two-week, 1,100-mile long race across Alaska, one of the toughest sled dog races anywhere. At least one dog has died in most of the previous races, this includes 20 since 2005. There have also been numerous reports of dog abuse, and since most of the dogs in the race are bred precisely for racing, the ones that don’t make great runners are oftentimes simply killed off. Proponents of the race argue that the hyper breeds that partake in it enjoy running, and that their wolf ancestors are known for endlessly roaming the woods. But it’s more than a stretch to compare a grueling 125 miles a day with a sled attached to your back, to just roaming around in the woods for fun. Read on to find out more about this brutal race. — Global Animal

Legalizing Ivory To Save Rhinos and Elephants

With ivory being used for jewelry, musical instruments, decoration, and a supposed “curable” medicinal substance, talk has begun to try and lessen the value of it. Read on to learn about how this deadly trade is effecting elephants and rhinos. — Global Animal

Good Dogs Matched With Bad Boys

(ANIMAL CONNECTION) TEXAS — The Victoria Regional Juvenile Justice Center has started a pilot program called the Dream Seekers Animal Rescue and Training. So far, the program includes Alice, a 2-year-old dachshund/terrier mix, and Devin Olguin and DeAndra Moffett, her first trainers. The idea is that by helping to train an animal, incarcerated youth will develop certain character traits like empathy, responsibility, and patience. Wonderful programs like this, including Prison Tails which matches prisoners with ‘unadoptable dogs,’ are becoming more and more popular as they continue to yield positive results. Read on to find out how these programs help rehabilitate both animals and people. — Global Animal
