FUKUSHIMA, JAPAN – (PHOTOS & VIDEO) Abandoned pets and farm animals are starving and dying in Fukushima’s 20km radiation exclusion zones. And a small band of animal rescue groups are bending the rules to try to save them. Risking radiation poisoning and arrest, Kinship Circle and other animal organizations are sneaking into the ‘dead zone’ to save any life they can.
JAPAN — While the ocean has a high capacity for diluting radiation, the radioactive isotope levels in the sea near Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant bring higher risk of death, mutation, and genetic degradation for marine life than previously predicted. The greatest threat is to future generations of sea creatures; the radiation could interfere with reproduction and the development of young, causing a collapse of the population. — Global Animal

(ANIMAL ABUSE) IOWA — Agribusiness has crafted a bill to silence animal welfare activists from exposing the truth about the suffering animals endure in slaughterhouses, factory farms, and other places where animals are a voiceless commodity. Pictures are powerful facilitators of action, and the animal welfare movement is no exception as images galvanize people together to fight against such injustices as puppy mills, barbaric testing on animals, and slaughterhouse cruelty. If passed, Senate File 431, nicknamed “The Whistleblower Bill,” will punish the recording and distribution of animal cruelty footage with fines of up to $7,500 and up to five years in prison. Basically, it makes reporting a crime a crime.
Many of the most shameful chapters in history were born to silence those who stood up for those who were defenseless. Too many horrors have taken the lives of too many because the truth about what’s going on was intentionally and systematically hidden.
