Protest The Cruelest Show On Earth (SCHEDULE BY CITY)

(CIRCUS PROTEST) For the rest of the year, filthy, poorly ventilated boxcars with the logo “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus” will tour the country carrying creatures of the wild in chains and cages. Elephants, monkeys, big cats, and other circus animals will be forced to travel for an average of more than 26 hours—and as long as 60 to 100 hours, all in the name of “entertainment.”  Here’s how you can join the circus protest and find great information on how to get involved. — Global Animal

Protesters Unite Against Cole Brothers Circus

(ANIMAL ABUSE) Cole Brothers, a well-known traveling circus, has been repeatedly cited and fined for failing to meet “minimum standards of care and treatment” for their animals used in exhibition, as established by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Numerous citations were issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for failure to give veterinary care to animals and for failure to provide sufficient space for the animals. Police Officer Kidnaps Dog In Daring Rescue

(DOG RESCUE) DENMARK — Lars Bo Lomholt, a Denamrk police officer, has been accused of kidnapping a German Shepherd scheduled to be euthanized for biting another dog. The officer now faces criminal charges and discharge from the North Zealand police department. Thor, the 7-year-old German Shepherd, bit a smaller dog once after being startled. Soon after, it was determined by the police department that the dog’s behavior was “unnatural,” and Thor was taken away from his rightful guardian. EU Bans All Cosmetic Animal Testing

(ANIMAL TESTING) After decades of lobbying from animal rights groups, particularly the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments, it was recently announced that that European Union is permanently banning the the import and sale of any animal-tested cosmetic products including ingredients. The ban will take effect as of March 11 and applies to all cosmetics including toiletries and beauty products from soap to toothpaste. Vanity Fair Magazine Not So Fair After All

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Animal Defenders International (ADI) recently helped cancel elephant rides for the Upland Lemon Festival after the city’s council witnessed ADI’s undercover video footage of the savage training techniques used by the notorious elephant rental company, Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT). Now Vanity Fair magazine has used one of  HTWT’s abused elephants, Tai—the same elephant used in the 2011 film, Water for Elephants—for a photo shoot featuring Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks, and Bradley Cooper among others. Gary Johnson, the trainer who is seen on the undercover video beating Tai, was also present at the photo shoot. Read on to find out more details and let Vanity Fair know that you don’t support elephant abuse. — Global Animal

NY Firefighters Host Squirrel Shootout

(ANIMAL RIGHTS) In the town of Holley, New York, the fire department is holding it’s 7th annual mass squirrel killing contest known as the “Hazzard County Squirrel Slam,” which will take place on February 15, 2013. The Holley Fire Department is located in the Village of Holley, in eastern Orleans County, NY. Their “tradition” of hunting squirrels has been brought to the attention of animal advocates from across the country.
