Whale Meat On Amazon.com Vanishes

(WHALES) As the result of a successful petition, more than 145 whale meat products were removed overnight from Amazon’s Japan site. Although the online retailer has a policy banning the sale of illegal wildlife products, Amazon.jp was selling whale bacon, whale jerky, and whale stew, among other illegal animal products. The Environmental Investigation Agency, Humane Society International and thousands of protesters are demanding that Amazon enact a company-wide ban on the sale of all whale, dolphin and porpoise products. Head Wildlife Official Kills Cougar (TAKE ACTION)

(WILDLIFE) The California Fish and Game Commission, created in 1870, manages the state’s wildlife, which is the complete opposite of what it’s chief executive is doing. Since it’s illegal to do so in California, Daniel Richards, the president of the Commission, paid $7,000 to hunt and shoot a mountain lion in Idaho. Richards used professional guides and hounds to stalk the cougar through the forest, chase him up into a tree and shoot him. He then posed for a heartwarming photo with the carcass. Western Outdoor News wrote, “Asked about California’s mountain lion moratorium, Richards didn’t hesitate. ‘I’m glad it’s legal in Idaho.’” — Global Animal

Coyote Coats: Fashion’s Latest Victim (TAKE ACTION)

(ANIMAL NEWS) CANADA—Clothing company Canada Goose Inc. is being virtually occupied by supporters of the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals. The Facebook protestors are opposing the company’s use of coyote fur trims. Coyotes are often captured in leg-hold traps, which are legal in every province in Canada, and often mutilate themselves trying to get out. Last year Global Animal ran a story on a fashion trend that harms roosters, and now Coyotes in Canada are being targeted for the sake of fashion. Canada Goose claims that their use of fur is “ethical and responsible” and that they only use fur to prevent frostbite. This seems hardly accurate as there are numerous alternative materials better suitable to keep the body dry and warm. The coats are also sold in areas where frostbite is not a threat. Read on to find out how the protestors got their message through. — Global Animal

Canada Picks Caribou Over Wolves (TAKE ACTION)

(TAKE ACTION) CANADA — Wildlife biologists are warning that the expanding oil and gas production in Alberta is contributing to the rapid decline of caribou herds. Canada’s Minister of Environment Peter Kent decided that rather than restoring the caribou’s habitat, the best way to deal with the situation is to shoot or poison the wolves that prey on caribou, an excruciating and prolonged way to die. Read on for more information on this devastating situation and how you can help the animals affected by the pipeline. — Global Animal
