Cop Jumps The Gun, Kills Dog (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL WELFARE) TEXAS — An Austin police officer stands accused of fatally shooting a man’s dog while responding to the wrong address on a domestic disturbance call.  The officer’s use of deadly force has been defended as being within the officer’s right and there has been no investigation and no disciplinary action. Yet, this is not the first time a domestic animal has been wrongly shot to death by a police officer. The problem is: officers typically do not receive instruction in animal behavior, which can lead them to misinterpret a non-threatening dog’s intentions as hostile. All too often, these officers resort to lethal force when other options are available (i.e. pepper spray or calling animal control). Unfortunately, until more police departments start teaching their officers how to deal with animals, this will not be the last dog to be victimized by cops. Friends of Cisco and his guardian have created a Facebook page dubbed Justice for Cisco where over 50,000 supporters have demonstrated their support. It’s popular among breeders, show dog exhibitors, sled dog racers, people who fight or breed animals illegally, animal hoarders, and selfish pet guardians. Already banned in Europe and Massachusetts, it’s time for the rest of the U.S. to follow suite. The amendment has already been weakened slightly to appease the veterinary lobby. Read on for more about devocalization, and how to ensure no more changes to the ban occur. — Global Animal

Unscrambling The Truth Behind Egg Farming

(FACTORY FARMING) The Humane Society of the United States released a new undercover video today that looks into the abhorrent conditions at Kreider Farms, a battery cage egg production facility in Pennsylvania. Nicholas Kristof, who recently wrote on arsenic found in chickens, reviewed the footage for an opinion piece in the New York Times. With chickens crammed into cages, dead birds sometimes left for weeks, flies and rodents, and the stench of ammonia, the conditions at Kreider Farms appear to rival McDonalds ex-egg supplier, Sparboe Farms. Read on for more on this new investigation and why some factory farms refuse to reform and meet industry standards. — Global Animal
