Coyote Coats: Fashion’s Latest Victim (TAKE ACTION)

(ANIMAL NEWS) CANADA—Clothing company Canada Goose Inc. is being virtually occupied by supporters of the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals. The Facebook protestors are opposing the company’s use of coyote fur trims. Coyotes are often captured in leg-hold traps, which are legal in every province in Canada, and often mutilate themselves trying to get out. Last year Global Animal ran a story on a fashion trend that harms roosters, and now Coyotes in Canada are being targeted for the sake of fashion. Canada Goose claims that their use of fur is “ethical and responsible” and that they only use fur to prevent frostbite. This seems hardly accurate as there are numerous alternative materials better suitable to keep the body dry and warm. The coats are also sold in areas where frostbite is not a threat. Read on to find out how the protestors got their message through. — Global Animal

No Justice In Japan For Dolphin Guardian (TAKE ACTION)

(DOLPHIN NEWS) On December 16, Sea Shepherd volunteer Erwin Vermeulen was arrested in Taiji, Japan for “pushing” a Japanese hotel employee. The Dolphin Resort Hotel employee  was supposed to be keeping people away from the area because the hotel was transporting dolphins from cages in the ocean into the hotel. The employee claims Vermeulen shoved him in the chest while taking pictures of dolphins. Vermeulen says he didn’t have to push anyone to get better pictures, because he simply walked right past the employee who was busy talking on his cell phone. DNA evidence conducted during the trial proved Vermeulen had no physical contact with the employee. Yet Erwin Vermeulen has spent 56 days in Japanese prison, and continues to be held. Read on for more info on the recent Sea Shepherd news. — Global Animal

No Dog Left Behind At Bakersfield Fairgrounds

(ANIMAL NEWS) — Today the Global Animal Foundation donated $2,000 to The Dog Spot Rescue for the immediate aid of the 35 remaining dogs left at the Kern County Fairgrounds. In January, 180 dogs were rescued from an animal rescuer that turned animal hoarder. Duain Preitz called officials asking for help with around 100 animals after his rescue organization was under threat of eviction. Police arrested Preitz on suspicion of felony animal cruelty after officials found not 100 animals, but a compound full of 215 live animals, most of them dogs, but also including cats, horses, ducks, chickens, and a pig. An undisclosed number of animals were already deceased. — Global Animal
