Bloody Protestors On Promenade

(ACTIVISM) CALIFORNIA — PETA held a bloody protest last Saturday on Santa Monica’s popular 3rd street promenade in front of the farmers market. Hundreds of shoppers stopped to look at the models covered in fake blood and packaged in styrofoam like a pound of ground beef. Although the protest was visually disturbing, it appeared to hit home for many passers-by, who stopped to pick up brochures and ask questions. The idea that all animals have the same parts as people, and that they actually have to be killed to make food, often seems to slip people’s minds at the grocery store when they are picking out their nicely packaged meat. Confronting people with the bold reality of what it really takes for them to enjoy that piece of chicken or steak may make them think twice the next time they buy their groceries. — Global Animal

The charges against him are related to an incident in Costa Rica from 2002, when Sea Shepherd protested shark finning. The outstanding warrant for his arrest was also for attempted murder, which Sea Shepherd is calling a “fallacy.” Sea Shepherd, the subject of the Animal Planet reality show Whale Wars, is hoping that the charges against him will be dropped. —Global Animal

California Says “Au Revior” To Foie Gras

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) CALIFORNIA — A battle between California chefs and animal rights activists is underway and the reason is fatty goose or duck liver, commonly known as foie gras. The ban to sell or produce foie gras in California will go into effect July 1, 2012. Although the ban was passed in 2004, officials allotted a seven-year grace period for the restaurant to develop a more humane way of producing the livers. But nothing has changed, except perhaps the increase in restaurants serving foie gras. — Global Animal
