Radical Activists ’269 Life’ Arrested In Israel

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) Tel Aviv police have arrested ten animal rights activists for scattering dead cow and fish heads around the Gush Dan area. The heads showed up in public places like water fountains where water was dyed blood red—most likely symbolizing animal slaughter. The actions were allegedly taken by a radical group called ’269life,’ who are known for branding themselves in public to show solidarity with farm animals. Part of the group’s message is, “No animal should be exploited to satisfy the selfish needs and whimsical desires of humans, and that is why we chose to use the industry’s own method of objectifying living beings as this symbolic means to convey our idea.” None of the suspects have a prior criminal record, and right now they are not admitting to any connection with these acts. UN Calls To Demolish Ivory Tower

(ANIMAL WELFARE) VIENNA — Nonsensical cures and asinine rituals continue to stimulate the demand for ivory in Southeast Asia. Rhinos and elephants have long been sought after for their precious tusks and horns, as their ivory is believed to cure a number of ailments. Of course, these cures aren’t rooted in fact, but belief in them has contributed to a recent surge in the poaching of these threatened species. Fortunately, the head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov, is pushing for tougher penalties for illegal poachers. Continue reading for more on the harsh truths behind this illegal industry and what others are doing to fight it. — Global Animal

Borko and Bulgaria’s Dr. Dolittle

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) Bulgaria’s own Dr. Dolittle is being persecuted for helping stray animals. This twisted tale began last May when Dr. Georgi Litov found Borko, a stray puppy who was so badly beaten that his spinal column was severed. Horrified to have found a pup who was treated so heinously, the kind Bulgarian doctor filed a petition to the Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office yet never received an acknowledgment from them. Ultimately, Dr. Litov decided to take Borko in and nurse him back to health. Continue reading for more on Borko and Dr. Litov’s story. — Global Animal

Actor Lays Down The Law On Seal Hunting

(CELEBRITY ACTIVISM) Actor Jude Law is joining celebrity activists like Ke$ha and Sarah McLachlan and speaking out against the annual Canadian seal slaughter. The Sherlock Holmes star recently teamed up with PETA and wrote a letter urging the World Trade Organization (WTO) to uphold the EU’s ban on seal products. The handsome Brit wrote, “I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. Even local sentiment is turning, and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.” The WTO’s final hearing on the issue will be held on April 29. PETA Invests To Free SeaWorld Animals From Cement Prisons

(SEA WORLD) In another bold attempt to release SeaWorld’s enslaved animals back into the wild, PETA has recently announced it has purchased enough common stock in the cruel company to give the animal activism group rights to attend annual shareholder meetings and submit resolutions. The group’s ultimate goal is to free the long-imprisoned orcas, which have been a subject of controversy for many years. Whales can swim up to a 100 nautical miles in one day, and experts agree that putting them in a pool causes them great trauma—as was the case with Tilikum who killed two SeaWorld trainers after developing aggression due to a lifetime in captivity. Hopefully this move will be allow PETA to actually bring about change, rather than just waste money. Read on to find out why it’s important to release SeaWorld’s orcas from captivity. — Global Animal

Shark Tag: A Game Of Survival

(OCEANS) Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water, it is. In truth, you should have never felt the need to get out of the water in the first place. The shark community has been forever plagued with misconceptions—most of which derive from the fact that little is actually known about them. Astonishingly, 250,000 sharks die daily at the hand of poachers. However, thanks to Dr. Neil Hammerschlag and a group of scientists, this shocking statistic could change. Hammerschlag has developed a shark tag that runs off solar power and has the ability to last for decades, which will help researchers observe sharks at a distance, and leave the animals untouched for the majority of their lives. Researchers hope to learn about sharks’ migratory patterns and nursing environments, with the ultimate goal of learning how to protect these impressive animals. Read below to take a look at Brain Lam’s remarkable first hand account of this research expedition. — Global Animal
