Chief Saunooke Bear Park Shut Down

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Chief Saunooke Bear Park in Cherokee, North Carolina is finally being shut down following animal abuse allegations from prominent animal rights and conservation groups such as PETA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an order this month to suspend the bear pit’s exhibitor license and fine the facility $20,000 after PETA revealed that it had uncovered evidence that the park failed to provide the bears with appropriate food, veterinary care, and safe housing. Delcianna Winders, a director at PETA, expressed her hopes that the bear park will remain closed for good and that the bears will be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. But unfortunately, despite the shutdown, the bears will likely remain with their owners for the time being. Read on to learn more about the abuse allegations and sign the petition to ban exotic animal ownership in North Carolina. — Global Animal

Iran Reports Launching Monkey Into Space

(ANIMAL WELFARE) On Monday, Iran announced that the nation had successfully launched a rocket carrying a live monkey into space as a prelude to the Islamic republic’s goal of a manned mission. State media claims the monkey was launched 70 miles in an “indigenous bio-capsule,” the Kavoshgar rocket dubbed “Pishgam” (Farsi for “Pioneer”), but gave no other details except that the monkey returned safely. In a statement, animal rights group PETA said, ”Iran is repeating the wasteful and cruel mistakes that marked the darkest days of the space race. Monkeys are highly intelligent and sensitive animals who not only are traumatised by the violence and noise of a launch and landing but also suffer when caged in a laboratory before and – if they survive – after a flight.” Now, for the second time, PETA is reaching out to the head of the Iranian Space Agency (ISA), urging them to stop this cruel practice. Fortunately, the European Space Agency (ESA), which is very active in space exploration, has declined any interest in monkey research and does not consider any need or use for such results. Sea Shepherd Intercepts Poachers, Not A Single Whale Killed

(OCEANS) According to a press release, Sea Shepherd Australia’s vessel, the SSS Brigitte Bardot, has successfully intercepted the Japanese whaling ship, Tushin Maru No. 3 in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Though it is appalling that the whaling fleet has been detected in Whale Sanctuary to begin with, Operation Zero Tolerance co-campaign leader Bob Brown believes, “It is likely that we have intercepted these whale poachers before a single harpoon has been fired.” Sea Shepherd will continue to do its part in upholding the Australian Federal Court ruling that bans Japanese whaling, while Operation Zero Tolerance co-campaign Leader Jeff Hansen reassures, “We will not tolerate a single whale death inside the established whale sanctuary by these poachers.” Read on to learn more about this great success. — Global Animal

Should New Zealand Eliminate Cats To Save Birds?

(LIFE WITH PETS) Economist and environmentalist Gareth Morgan recently ignited a controversy after an interview where he said that all cats should be gradually removed from New Zealand. Because New Zealand has one of the highest cat ownership rates in the world, he advises that all of the country’s residents not only neuter their cats, but also turn over strays to local authorities for euthanization in order to protect native bird species. Many of Morgan’s propositions are quite extreme, including his suggestion that people should catch stray cats with cage-traps and that the government should offer “free disposal of cats.” But while Morgan is not alone in his beliefs, we would like to know what you think. Is Morgan’s stance too extreme? Make your voice heard in the comments below. — Global Animal
