Family Pets: Victims Of Police Brutality?

(ANIMAL WELFARE) The mistaken shooting of a Texas man’s beloved pet dog has ignited an investigation into how police treat pets. The dog, Cisco, died after the police officer invaded the wrong house when responding to a 911 call. After gathering 100,000 “likes” on Facebook, Michael Paxton, the guardian of Cisco, received a formal apology from the department. However, Cisco’s death has sparked nationwide interest in why police often kill pets. The numbers are staggering. This year alone, 100 separate reports of pets shot by cops documented in news articles resulted in the question of if they were justified. What should be done to educate police officers about dogs and their inherent instinct to protect their family guardians? Read on for the details on why police officers seem trigger-happy when it comes to family pets. — Global Animal

Cop Jumps The Gun, Kills Dog (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL WELFARE) TEXAS — An Austin police officer stands accused of fatally shooting a man’s dog while responding to the wrong address on a domestic disturbance call.  The officer’s use of deadly force has been defended as being within the officer’s right and there has been no investigation and no disciplinary action. Yet, this is not the first time a domestic animal has been wrongly shot to death by a police officer. The problem is: officers typically do not receive instruction in animal behavior, which can lead them to misinterpret a non-threatening dog’s intentions as hostile. All too often, these officers resort to lethal force when other options are available (i.e. pepper spray or calling animal control). Unfortunately, until more police departments start teaching their officers how to deal with animals, this will not be the last dog to be victimized by cops. Friends of Cisco and his guardian have created a Facebook page dubbed Justice for Cisco where over 50,000 supporters have demonstrated their support. Read on to learn more about the story and show your support on the Justice for Cisco Facebook page. — Global Animal

Indiana’s Hitchcockian Murder of Crows

(CROW WOES) INDIANA — Meet Joy Sacopulos: Terre Haute, Indiana’s resident crazy crow lady. Well not that crazy—the entire town’s going mad from the vocal birds. How mad you might ask? The issue regarding the 100,000 crows invading the 60,000 person town was enough for City Hall to commission the formation of a Crow Patrol (not be confused with Irish alt-rockers Snow Patrol) in which residents, led by 72-year-old Sacopulos, wear bright orange vests and shoot fireworks into densely populated treetops. Read on for more on Sacopulos and her mission to drive the noisiest of the avian community out of her once quiet town. — Global Animal
