Before arriving at the sanctuary, the cows were confiscated by animal control and a law enforcement agency in their hometown of Palm Beach County, Florida.

Operated by The Fund for Animals, an affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch is the largest animal sanctuary for formerly abused, neglected, and abandoned animals.

The sanctuary is nearly 1,300 acres large and home to about 1,200 domestic and exotic animals. The majority of the animals at the sanctuary were rescued from near-death situations at slaughterhouses, trophy hunting ranches, research labs, etc.

The ranch is not a zoo and is not open for public visits. The founder, Cleveland Amory, had a specific vision for this ranch.

He said the Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch, “would be a place where animals are looked after, not looked at.”

The initial owner purchased the five cows in order to qualify for an agricultural tax subsidy. Although the owner ultimately saved money by purchasing the sows, he neglected the animals, leaving them without adequate food or shelter. Thus, they were eventually seized by animal control.

The five beautiful bovines named Kelcey, Chetana, Kris, Kate, and Vegan arrived at the sanctuary in December 2013. The cows were malnourished and sent to quarantine where they were medically evaluated, vaccinated, and given proper care to gain weight safely.

Since then, the cows successfully completed the quarantine process and are now roaming the 1,300 acres of land with over 40 other rescued cows.

Sanctuary director Ben Callison says,

“All owned animals deserve care and respect, regardless of their perceived purpose. This cruelty case illustrates the disregard some have toward these magnificent creatures, and we are excited to have them live out their lives here with the dignity, respect, and care they deserve.”
